Remember that new electric fuel pump, still works great, but weak glow plugs
booked it in to shop, it a IDI 1.9l with 300km on car
had to tow to the shop, no start
glow plugs, rail, hooked pump to solenoid fuel shut off, checked timing belt out 3 notches Opp's
weak lower timing belt pulley (to crankshaft), new one, all seals, valve cover gasket. runs like a dream in shop,on road. park for 2 hrs outside, weak start up. tested injector pump, (weak), that on Dec 24 at 3 pm
nothing in Saskatoon for exchange. this shop closed for the hoildays until the 4th of Jan.

Welcome to VW ownership.. ;D It's not always that bad.. Just the first few years till you get the bugs worked out. ::)
-
Hi Maxfax I love the VW and diesel, Yes a used unit can have a few bugs to work out.
Some day a new one
thanks Kworth2007

Sadly so many of these buggers have been used, abused, and neglected.. I used to thing that someday I would have me a newer one.. But after changing an alt on an '03 TDI yesterday, I think I'll stick to my relics..

another thing, most TDI owners are un-aware there is actually a turbo on there engine, and are even more un-aware that you should cool the turbo down when you shut the ride off. most turbo cars suffer from cracked manifolds and wasted turbos. vnt cars always suffer from coked vanes.

Hi Rabbit
Thanks for the reminder, I am a trucker and drive it like a heavy hauler my VW, I like it cool down I had a used Freightliner Detroit turbo fly apart , during my road test for Over the road trucker in January fins all over the inside of the exhaust system.
One hell of a noise and instant no Power with a load.
Anyone know if a high idle kit is available for a IDI VW??
I sold Ford Diesel pickup in the late 90's and they had a idle kit on them 1350 rpm min up to 1750 rpm
small computer inside the driver could set, Cold weather many bent push rods due to the cool engine on the top end, and the 15W40 oil. warm up the truck, they thought and hit the highway and 2 to 5 miles a knock knock/loss power opp's. no warranty.
Awsome site for information. Hoping Jan 4/10 It be ready to drive, spent over 4 month of fuel on my old F150 pickup to run to work for the 3 weeks it been layed up.

Thanks Rabbit
I again thank you for the information, my wife has no clue on this VW that the scary part.
I explained the glow plug light, cold start cable. she said it is much things to do to start the car.
I also was not trying to put you down on my last reply as well. I am straight to the point person.

I have Good news! and Bad news!
the starting problem is a HUGE pain in my A_ _ !
glow plugs changed, installed new electric fuel pump after the filter, rebuilt the injection pump ( few seals check pressure), 4 New injectors, checked all timing marks, runs like shop SWEET
4 hours or more outside no start! hmmm what could it be!
1 & 2 cylinder had weak injectors OK replace them after warm compression test
warm compression test was done prior to the pump & injectors getting changed out
COLD compression test on 1 & 2 less than 100 lbs each, FOUND the problem now
***more cash need to remove the head & check pistions and rings. OUCH! Can't sell it like it is, give it to the garage for the long delay? It 's yours? then drive what?
going week 5 without wheels, they were closed bewtween XMas * New years.
Anyone else having starting problems when car is cold, check the compression when cold & hot.
Willing to work Odd jobs to pay the bill, picking up trash from the ditches anything.
Cory Drive it like U stole it!! YA

Completely agree... cold compression figures are a really important part of diagnosing cold start problems. I've seen huge differences (75 psi or more) in a car's cold compression vs warm. And of course for a diesel "cold" is when we really need the help.
The challange is that VW doesn't post cold compression numbers... so it's tricky to know what normal looks like... which is why "warm" is considered tried-and-true.

For sure now the shop looks foolish, and are willing to HELP me out on the labour and parts to get this out of the shop,
15 yrs in VW this tech been working on again a different problem each time.
Labour book is quoting 10 hrs, have a complete unit to drive hassle free form the next 300,000 km
Cory Expensive birthday gift , no hang over!

Update on 96 Jetta 1.9L
engine is stripped down WOW the hard starting, save me BIG cash!
compression rings on two pistons were in 5 & 6 pieces, still in the groove, one crankshaft bearing the shine is gone. 4 new oversized pistons, bearing. Checking the valves in the am they look good. Use the gasoline leak test on the valves for leak down.
:-\
complete valves hair line crack between the cylinder on head side
turbo looks fine, but I spend the EXTRA at this time and put on a rebuilt? mmmmm have a $10,000 engine in a $ 500 car. Should may stopped back at the Injectors and sold the car.
Cory My 30 yr old Ford pickup be good to me these pass 6 weeks. But hard on fuel. Later VW Forum

Wow that's some horrible luck :(
-
have a $10,000 engine in a $ 500 car.
The one thing I always tell myself after spending 3x the value of the car on an engine is that I can always swap it to a new body... Of course I never do... ::)

Hi Maxfax
I agree, I the total repair bill will be paid for within 8 months or less on the fuel savings, Now I can take the family out on the highway, in the HOT sun and not have any problems, it would sucked bad I was goingto drive it out to Edmonton on Xmas day, Expensive tow bill if it would have piled up.
Now looking for a spare car hmmm anything in Western canada?
Cory
HMMMM! fuel milage before the rebuild was mid 40's on short trips look out now!!!!
New GM for the Sask Roughriders our CFL team how many months before he walks out on the team?

This next Monday AM the old Ford goes to shop
R&R steering column or the signal switch on the inside of the wheel the cold weather & age it wont cancel out anymore. love to change this myself but my LUCK in 2010 is the pits
has 160Km on 5.8L I give it a tune up Plugs/wires etc, maybe valve cover gasket.
this way it the spark plug is to break off, they can be the one to play with it (15 -20 yrs old the plugs) the owner I purchased it from 3 years ago told me OUCH.
Drive my Ford, purchase a fuel station, Dam it pulls anything you hook to the hitch!
