SO I WAS POSTING A LOT ON THIS FORUM, THOUGHT I MIGHT AS WELL MAKE A BUILD THREAD.
Got a new 87 jetta, its a turbo diesel. Gonna have some fun, first the engine rebuild and then bodywork.

shes got 460000km, so im going to need a full rebuild. Funny story - the engine is out of a mk1, theres a bunch of strange mods and wires all over the place i cant wait to clean her up and hide all the ugly wires. the pass side mk1 mount was cut in half so it would clear the frame rails...
peace.

That turbo looks a lot like a Garett t3.
You found that big nut on the end of the oil return. Good job! I hate that thing with a passion.
I hope you could with-strain from turning the block over. I ruined one of my cylinder walls by turning the engine over after it had sat for a long time. Piece of rust gouged out a harsh score in one of the cylinders.
Tip for cleaning, brake cleaner, and lots of it. buy like 3-4 cans of the stuff and good non-recylcled shop towel. or the blue stuff, the blue stuff is killer.
your piston heads look mint by the way. Possibly recently replaced?
Those cracks are innocent until they go all the way into the coolant passages behind them.
This happened to me and i had ghetto water injection... lots of power, insane amount of white smoke during but terrible run aways from blow by and other messes that it caused.
Coolant always exploded from pressure. I had to replace my head. (if your block wasn't mechanical i'd say buy a new AAZ head) You can do a conversion but it's likely not worth it for what you want to do.
Sick rotors too! I wish i had some.
My rust was so bad under the plastic body panels that i removed them and just body worked them back together best i could. My thread is on here somewhere...
-
just a note, those sexy mk3 brakes are probably only going to fit on an mk3. i grabbed a set from the jy also, but they are too big, just by a little bit. just enough that the naked eye doesnt catch it.
-
thanks everybody, im in the process of cleaning my head, intake and exhaust manifolds and all the little parts. shouldi use brake cleaner for that as well? im using cheap over cleaner and gasoline - and so far its working all right just takes a lot of scubbing....
i compared those brake rotors to mine, and they are identical - they might have a bigger diameter by few mm, but it think that it because mine are very rusty on the edges...
also my pistons have the strange "U" shape scratched into them, is that normal?
PS. the turbo has a little sticker on it it says VW OOOO (AUDI=]) and it says garret so i think your right it is a T3.
-
while your pistons did not hit the valves, it looks like they said hello to the prechambers.
strange...

You must still have a power steering rack in the car...now without a steering pump. Best plan would be to install a standard steering rack with good tie rods, boots and ends. This is the best time to make the switch (after that engine comes out).
Looks the the previous owner used some sort of long bolt on that rear engine/trans mount (below the brake booster) and put a hillbilly spacer on it. He may have damaged the threads in the mount. You need the correct bolt and to make sure those threads are good. The original bolt back there goes flush with the surface....it has a 17 mm head on it. Good place to use anti-sieze when it goes back together.
How deep is that scratch on cylinder #2 of head combustion surface?

thats the plan stan, gonna get a manual rack and delete all the ps sutff... that bolt in the back is weird im gonna put a normal one in.
i will take more pics og the cylinders and show you, do you mean the scratch on piston? the U SHAPED ONE?

i want to paint my block and head, but im not sure if that is such a good idea, i cleaned the head pretty well but there is still tiny specs of oil caked on that i cant remove, would it be alright to paint this way? and what kind of paint shouldi use? primer?

Hello everyone, my project is about halfway done and i have more questions than ever. i started porting and polishing my head and intake, i got some gaskets and seals from GAP today, but i still need to get the following:
1. Headgasket
2. Piston Rings
3. CV Boot (inner)
4. Head Bolts (arp?)
5. Oil Pan Gasket
6. Crankshaft Bearings
Is this a reliable website? has anyone bought from them? www.diypartscatalog.com (http://www.diypartscatalog.com)
I have no idea what those little silver and gold rings inside the valve cover gasket, can someone tell me what they are for? should i get new ones?
so help me out here please, i would like to buy these all in one place so i dont get raped for shipping and i also want to get good quality, recommend me a onlinestore =]
Should i get new injector heat shields?
Where can i get ARP head bolts? roughly how much do they cost? Part Number?
TIA.
-
12mm stud PN is 251-4701, I think summit racing has the best prices I don't know for sure though.
For online stores I like www.partsgeek.com (http://www.partsgeek.com)
New heat shields are a must and they are cheap.

sweet thanks, another question haha
my diesel 5 speed is ***ed. i dont know whats wrong with it and i cant find out - trannys are my weak spot, dont know *** about repairing them ahha.
so i was thinking could i use the tranyn out of my 1.8 parts car? its a AUG i think 5speed. would it be able to hold up the tourqe and power of the TD? and how will the gearing work? cuz diesels generally have lower revs than gassers??
-
This will tell you the gear ratios: http://www.scirocco.org/gears/ (http://www.scirocco.org/gears/) and the calculator is fun ;D.
AFAIK all of the manual tranny's for mk1, mk2 and some mk3 are the 020 box just with different gearing so you won't have to worry about it going boom unless you do some serious mods to the engine.....or run it out of oil. ;)

How deep is that scratch on cylinder #2 of head combustion surface?
do you mean the scratch on piston? the U SHAPED ONE?
Nope, the scratch on the head that looks like it was dragged across a stud. That concerns me too as it crosses the head gasket / cylinder seal. You really don't want that kind of leak. Here part of my project where I re-surfaced my head due to a scratch as well. http://www.vwdiesel.net/forum/index.php?topic=15633.330 (http://www.vwdiesel.net/forum/index.php?topic=15633.330)
Other suggestions - do the rod to crank bearings too. When they say crank bearings, they mean only the ones from the crank to the block. Also, I'd install an intercooler and be sure to set the injector timing correctly. On a cheap rebuild, I don't know that you would be happy with the results compared to the $900+ full Monty that Giles will do for you. Usually you get what you pay for - http://www.performancediesel.ca/performance.htm (http://www.performancediesel.ca/performance.htm) There is a detailed post in this forum on how to rebuild yourself. It will not increase the performance like Giles does, but its cheaper.
Last suggestion and as important as that head scratch, do you have a cover for the cam belt? One little pebble from the road, or a thrown alt belt and you WILL have broken metal when the pistons and valves try to share the same space at the same time.
-
thanks for the advice arb, ill be getting a timing belt cover from the jy next time i go.
if my wallet lets me ill do rod and crank bearing all together, as for the scratch in the head, i dont know what your talking about, my head doesnt have scrathes on it, they only problem is the crack between the valves, but i measured them and they are within specification of 0.5mm so i think im good to go,.
cheers.
-
it looks like he is talking bout the scratch shown in this pic, going from the face of the valve out into the gasket area:
its hard to tell it it is indeed a scratch(which would be a problem) or if it is just a line drawn in the gunk on the surface of the head.
clean the head up real good and make sure there are no scratches you can catch your fingernail on.

oh no, haha that isnt a scratch. i took that picture when we just pulled the head and it was all caked up in oil.
i need machine the head surface because i cant get all the residue off, i was thinking of doing it myself. has anyone done this?
