hi there, i was wondering if a MB sd300 turbo would fit onto my 1.6td ?>
it looks almost the same, the downpipe and air intake. im not sure about the exhaust mani though, help me out here has anybody done this before?
would there be any advatages to running the MB turbo?
cheers.
-
if you machine a vw turbine housing to fit the merc center section then it will fit perfectly. otherwise you have to use a standard t3 manifold.
-
The turbo lag is too big on the SD (we upgrade to VTG), can you imagine how slow the 1.6 will spool this turbo.
In my opinion its not worth the work. Try to adapt and operate a VTG.
Tom
(SD with VTG out of 320 CDI, still working on the vane control)

It's not a standard t3 flange on the Mercedes, you"ll need an adopter to go from the mercedes OEM flange to a regular t3

ok thanks for the replies.
is there any stock turbo that would be an upgrade for the 1.6?
what about 1.9td turbo? could i just swap out the manifold and turbo?
i just want to find something a little bigger from a junk yard and not give up any lag,
-
at this point im running stock, i dont know how much that is... 8psi?
im planning on mildly polishing the intake and exhaust mani and head.
This is going to be a daily driver, and since im doing a whole engine rebuild id like to have a little more power.
i need some schooling on turbos, im new to diesel as well.
i dont want to rape the engine with extreme boost but i wanna have a little more give in her.
help me out here dudes.
cheers
-
i do believe stock engines can hold 13-15 psi pretty reliably, from what I have heard.
plus it will make the turbo actually more powerful then at higher boost. It will be very close to it's sweet spot. and will love it, and last forever. lol
-
that wounds pretty good, is there any way of installing a boost controller? or is that too much wiring?

respectfully, you should read hrough the FAQ section and some of the other threads on here. you will find all the information your looking for, and more to boot.
-
I couldn't agree more with Andrew.
The Stock turbos are way over sized, a smaller turbo will net you more usable power..
The k14 as mentioned is a great choice (if you can find one) as is the k03.
Speaking from experience here ;D

i thought the merc turbo was just a T3 flange? i know its not the VW t3 pattern, thats for sure.

I have a turbo from a 1992 300D 2.5 and an exhaust manifold for an 8V VW that claimed to have a T3 flange, and their vastly different.
T3 flange isn't square, the merecedes is. The benz is also alot smaller of a flange.
-
4 cyl Vw does not have T3 flange. The 1,6/1,9 4-bolt flange (http://www.turbomaster.info/img/juntas/210244.gif) is VW only. Mercedes 300 has the T3 flange (http://www.forcedinductions.com/images/T3flange.gif)
-
hmmm, cause i saw one up at a wrecking yard. and it looks like it had a t3 flange is all.
-
alright thanks for the info everybody. what cars have stock k14 or k03?
and how do i know what i have right now? its a 1.6 td?
edit: also i would like to know what id have to do to install boost pressure and exhaust temp gauges. i need the thermocouple and sending units right? would i have to drill holes in the mani fold or downpipe for that? or is there a spot where i can just bolt them in?
cheers & peace
-
Look in the FAQ for where to get the thermocouple and where to mount it. ;)

i took of my turbo today, it has a little VW / AUDI sticker and it says garrett but no other markings how do i identify it?
also my head has little cracks between cylinders, is that bad? i heard most turbo diesels have them and it no big deal.
what do you think?

You mean between the valves? It's normal, there's a limit but I forgot what it is ::).
-
alright thanks, i really need to get a bentley... is there a diesel specific or shouldi just get the mark 2 kind?

I forget what car you're dealing with, mk2 bentley combines gas and diesel while mk1 has separate books for gas and diesel.
-
ok sweet ill get the mk2 kind.
another question haha, what kind of headgasket should i get? 1,2 or 3 notch? i know i cant get the metal 1.9 hg, is there anything else i should look for?
i have a mechanical lifter head, right?
how can i tell if its from an n/a diesel or turbo diesel? (did they ever make mechanical lifter TDs?)
-
oh yea, they made lots of mech headed td engines. anything before 84. you have to check piston protrusion to know what head gasket you need. you cant just look at the outside of the engine.
-
does anyone know a place that sells coolant flange to head gaskets?
-
Yeah the engine going in my car was out of a car made 12/85 and is a solid lifter MF block. Granted the engine was probably cast long before assembly.
Don't know about that flange new, but someone in the for sale section might have one.
-
i just need the gaskets.
-
if its not a head gasket or an exhaust gasket, why dont you just make your own? gaskets are just paper... there are soo many oil filter box top gaskets in everything i own.
-
haha nice, thats what i was gonna do, but then i thought i should get real ones...
thanks
-
real gaskets are not necessary, take your gasket paper, lay it over whatever you want to make a gasket for, and start tapping on the outlines of the part with the hammer, it cuts the gasket paper to the exact right size. ive made millions of gaskets out of random pieces of card board and poster board. but i like using real gasket paper better.

Merry christmas everybody, is there high heat paint i can use to paint my exhaust manifold? what do you think?
id paint it black or some plain color, i just dont want it rusty... or is it gonna rust anyways??/
-
i know paint just burns off. even the high heat bake on stuff.
-
what about this stuff?
they say it adds HP haha...

What stuff? (I assume there's supposed to be a link?) ;D

oops link didnt work.. here ya go : http://www.techlinecoatings.com/Exhaust.htm#blacksatin (http://www.techlinecoatings.com/Exhaust.htm#blacksatin)
-
nice, well i made my own build thread.. cuz the thread direction is far from the original topic haha, and i still have toons of questions. iv learned a ***load from this webbsite its great!!
cheers.

laugh heartily but... I have an amish customer that does powdercoating and on exhaust stuff it works outstanding. It holds up to the heat of my friends red head cummins big truck and all the little stuff we have done. I am sure him being amish has nothing to do with the performance of the powdercoating so if you have a shop nearby see what it would run you to give it a shot.
