Title: Thermostat temps
Post by: overdrivegear on October 25, 2009, 07:44:18 pm
I just recently installed an 87 C thermostat in my 1.6 NA.  The engine seems like it's much happier running hotter versus my old t-stat that hung open and struggled to get up to 130 F.  What does everyone else run in their cars?

I have the hottest Tstat i can find in mine. I think it's 195 F and engine is happy. No problem on the hottest days around here 90- 95F.

X2 on that..   195 Deg F  (roughly around 90 C I think)..   Diesels like it hot for best combustion... If you cooling system is in ideal order even on really hot days you should not overheat with the hottest T-stat...

130F is definitley much too cold, sounds like your t-stat was DOA..   I think the coolest stat I have ever seen for these is maybe a 160 deg F..

I have an 87C (188.6F), the gauge sits on the mark past half.

Is that pretty regular with a NA1.6 for the OEM gauge to be just past half at highway speeds?  I always thought that was a bit too high, as I don't have a aftermarket gauge in place.  I take it's runniing about 95°C at that point?

I'm running a 92C thermostat and the cyl head temp is 203-209F depending on load. The fan switch is set to come on at 216F. The in dash gauge could be inaccurate due to the voltage regulator on the instrument cluster, which is my problem. I installed a digital gauge at the outlet of the cyl head.
Happy Turkey Day!

I run an 82 or 85. Can't remember. I like my temps low.

Gets too hot here in the summer to be any higher for my comfort.
