Title: D24T power!!!
Post by: vwjunkie53 on October 19, 2009, 07:57:28 pm
Hi folks,
just thought I would share a couple pics of my '84 volvo with the D24T six... Us D24 guys never get any love on the volvo forums, but I figured you guys would appreciate the setup.
Here are the mods: T3/T4 with a .50 a/r compressor housing, manual boost controller (running 15lbs boost for now) 3" turbo back exhaust, modified manifold with 2" mandral bent charge pipe, water/alcohol injection, and of course the pump has been "adjusted".  Its still running the 10mm head though.

Here are some pics and a link to a video so you can hear it:

Very nice, but the air filter is far too small.

That air filter is fine. It will flow more than the gaint stock paper element.
Very nice build.

Thanks,
the air filter was a freebee from a friend.  I'm going to build a nice air box for it and get a better filter.  However that one does have he inverted cone in the top so there is a decent amount of filter area.

I love it.  You know, I was in the hunt for a nice early 242GT to swap in a B24T, but this Corrado came along and I couldn't pass it up.

Early Volvo's aren't that heavy.  242 turbo's weighed about 3100 lbs, 245T's weighed about 3400 fully loaded.

I have an 83 245 D24. Just located a 200k mile D24T for $750.00 shipped to my door. Just need to sell some stuff. 80 horses in a wagon is not a lot of fun. As soo as I get my Caddy on the road Im gonna get the Volvo done. Your setup is very nice. Getting a woody.

A nice big intercooler in the grill would finish things off nicely.  What a sweet sound!

I don't know about a rabbit, but maybe a jetta or something.  I had actually thought about it, but man the volvo is really a nice car!  Its more confortable, rides better, is quieter, and is just overall nicer than a golf or jetta.  Not knocking them I have had a few of them.  Honestly I couldn't have cared less about the car I just wanted it because of the engine, but ended up really liking the car.  Also have a turbo diesel thats rear wheel drive is a hell of alot more fun...  I originally found a video on Youtube of a TD volvo and the sound was what made me want one. Sounds like a cummins turbo diesel.  I have had a few 1.6 TDs and adding two more cylinders to it makes it that much more fun.  Even with how big it is and what it weighs, its probably good for low 15s to high 14s with only the 15lbs of boost I'm running.  When I get the head studs in we are really going to see what it can do.  At this point, I haven't even removed the collar on the fuel screw!  There is alot left in it!

Thanks for all the compliments
Jason

hmm. the difference of a jetta and a rabbit? the trunk... the front half of the cars are exactly the same. Mk1 Jettas and rabbits had tons of (most of) the same pieces. Mk2's were the same. golfs and jettas were pretty much the same car, but with a trunk instead of a hatch.

and like you, i ended up buying a non-vw for the engine. i paid 250 bucks for my Audi 5000 TD just for the engine, and it turns out the car isnt as bad as i thought it was. you are right, its nice having way more room in it. and the interior is way more plush than a rabbit or jetta. its alot wider and longer than a rabbit/jetta also. i bet your volvo and my audi are about the same size. my car weighs 2800 or something like that. ive got my engine turned up to about 20 psi with the collar intact on the pump. it smokes a little bit when you get on it, but is quickly cleared up once you hit boost. the trans is about gone tho, so its not that fast, but it pulls like a mother for a 5000, in my oppinion. when i drove it home, it was a 500 mile trip with about 3 psi of boost. 3 of the 5 manifold gaskets were blown out. BAD. i almost thought it had an injector knock or really bad piston slap when i got it, but it was just a really really bad exhaust leak. rest of the exhaust system was perfect, kinda felt bad cutting it up, but not really at the same time.

I was thinking more of a '85 or newer jetta.  The cars came quite a way when they went to the A2 chassis.  I don't think a rabbit could hold up the engine.  The D24T is very heavy, in fact the volvo diesels came with different front springs to hold the weight!

I would guess a Audi diesel is about as rare as my volvo, at least in the midwest anyway.  I have never seen another volvo diesel, ever... The same goes for an audi diesel.  There just aren't any around.

i have seen 2 TD Audis in my life. one for sale on craigslist. white, pristene, cracked head.
and a gold one for sale on craigslist. not so pristene. but it ran. and it was 250 bucks. SOLD! so now i own it...
ive only seen one Volvo TD, and one BMW TD also. they are pretty rare i think.  a diesel benz is extremely common tho.

Yeah, there aren't many of the audi's out there, and most have cracked heads. I have read somewhere that there are only 500 of the Audi 5k Turbo diesel engines in the U.S.... I have three of them. Haha. I have never even heard of the D24T before, but it seems awesome. I love the car! What do you get for economy on a highway speed trip? I pulled 35 mpg with four people in my audi, but usually only get around 25.

Volvo 240 diesel on CL for 350 bucks.

http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/cto/1422961630.html

how much does a head cost? are they made of unobtanium?
cause if i could pick the car up cheap, i might condiser it.

and ive never really been able to check the mileage, the speedo clicks like a bastard. and the odometer works intermittently.
i went almost 500 miles and didnt burn an entire tank of fuel. i dunno how big the gas tank is. honestly i know pretty much nothing about the car. just the engine.

I've seen maybe 10 diesel 5000's, and out of those, 3 were turbos diesel, beautiful cars. To bad they were in the wrecking yard.
I had a friend that had a diesel Volvo wagon 5spd. Big POS.
They are out there, its just they were kind of weird and so are the drivers  ::). "Nothing personal"

why would you ruin a perfectly good VW with cummins parts? and what the hell would you put on there? a cummins is about 800 times bigger than a D24. haha.

hy35 and what ever pump parts would be beneficial. probably not much haha

I am going to be using a 4BTA injection pump on my supercharged 1.6
Title: Re: D24T power!!!
Post by: vwjunkie53 on October 22, 2009, 08:32:33 pm
I wouldn't mind a 11mm head... The cummins 6bt has a stock 12mm head, but I don't know if you could reduce the fuel flow down enough to where the engine could idle.  That displaces a crap load of fuel, hell enough to black-stack a 5.9 liter engine!  Its only a 2.4!

Hy35?  Good luck getting that thing to spool without some bigtime work.  My turbo is borderline being a T3T4 with a .63 A/R turbine housing.  I'm on the hunt for a .48 A/R stage III turbine housing, that would be perfect.

rotory or inline?
if you were using an inline pump, i would be EXTREMELY interested in how you do it. i always thought that an inline pump from a 4BT or a Merc 4 cylinder would be amazing on a VW.

bosch rotary VE pump.

an inline would be damn cool, but way too much work.

next time im up in portland, im going to pick up a merc 4 cyl injection pump just to see what needs to be modified, or if it can even be done, to make it fit. if it doesnt look like too much work, i may just try and make it work. i fully expect it to need new mounts to even come close to working tho. and custom fuel lines. but it would be really sexy once it was done.

I have had thoughts of an inline pump for the D24... Like a Bosch P7100.  Totally too big and would look rediculus, but man if I had the time and money to waste what a fun project that would be to try to get working.  I suppose it wouldn't be too bad to get a inline off a Benz straight six, though I don't know how much stuff is available to hotrod those pumps.

The VE with a 11mm head on this engine can potentially push 300hp.
