Title: another "what turbo is this"
Post by: 1outof5 on October 18, 2009, 07:07:02 am
I've been given this newly rebuilt turbo, it's a Garrett (writen on the housing) but that's all I know.
The usual green tag is no longer there an in it's place there's a piece of sheet metal with a "serial" number that's partly visible (looks like it was hand engraved). Can any one tell what it is? The information from the gift bearer is that it came out of a passat AAZ but I have my doubts as I thought that the AAZ only came with a K14. Is this a T2?

thats a trapezoid T3 flange on there it looks like. its a T3 tho for sure. the junk one i used to have looked just like that. looks like its just a stock 1.6 turbo.

wheres the T2 flange? and the water cooling? thats the oil feed line you see in the picture.

What T2 flange? All 1,6 turbos and 1,9 K14&T2 share same flanges. AAZ T2 is not water cooled. Here is 1,6 T3 (http://www.kotinet.com/matti.farm/Audi/Moottori/114-1492_img.jpg), donīt mind vnt20 on right.

It's not a stock 1.6 T3. Center section looks different, and it has a different wastegate actuator.

so T2 then!

what are the differences between a "standard" T2 and a watercooled T2? (yes I know the watercooled T2 is watercooled  ;D)
What would be better for a 1.6 TD front mounted IC, Giled pump, 15/18psi ? Its for my daily driven caddy.

If the watercooled T2 is a better option are the parts interchangeable, like taking the parts of the H2O T2 and putting them on the "standard" T2 (as it has just been rebuilt so like new)?

I wouldn't mess with it, too small.  18psi would be out of it's efficiency range for sure.

I have this same turbo set up with a Giles pump and a Saab intercooler.   You didn't say what vehicle you were going to install it on???  I have this setup on a Vanagon Syncro with a high top.  I have been told that the T2 is very similar to a K14; performance-wise.  As Andrew pointed out, it spools quickly which is really great for altitude and in my case- the mountains of CO.  I have mine setup for 17psi of boost right now.  The only drawback; I am fairly convinced that using such a small turbo helps heat up my oil much faster than if I were to use something like a K03.

What are the boost charasteristics of that setup? Boost vs rpm & boost on the highway cruising? My understanding is the T2 is good & happy at 20psi. Maybe pushing its efficiency there but as Andrew said above, nice & driveable.

I am in the process of sorting out my tachometer so I can't answer the first question.  I would say that for hwy cruising, I am between 5-10psi and only get above 14psi when I am climbing a long grade.  I know of another person that ran the T2 on a Syncro Westy at 20psi with good results.

I'm sure it does heat up the oil more than a more efficient turbo would, but the K03 would be similar.  You'd have to go with a k24 or T3 which in a vanagon at altitude have unbearable lag.  Those are all the reasons that I'm happy to deal with the added complications of VNT turbos.

Is there a reason that you have not tried a GT series turbo from Garrett?  They seem to have fast spooling, ball bearings (that are both oil and water cooled), and have plenty of power.
