... tis the season for a whack of "now that it's getting colder my car won't start" posts and I thought I'd get ahead of it by building a "Glowplug 101" HOW-TO.
Got most of the pictures I need but I don't own an MK1 or MK2 these days so can't take pictures of the all-important coolant temp sensor. Google images couldn't find any for me either.
So, if anyone has a reasonable camera and an older diesel I'm looking for:
- good picture of the MK1/ early MK2 brass glow plug coolant sensor, usually on the driver side coolant flange (got it... thanks Bobby!)
- good picture of the later MK2 plastic glow plug coolant sensor... usually on the front coolant flange iirc
- a picture of an MK2 fuse/relay panel that shows the location of the glow plug relay
Anything that can scaled 800x600 at 72dpi is perfect, and of course you'll be credited / retain your copywrite of the image.
Thanks in advance,
Vince

I can send you a pic of my 92 EcoDiesel with the plastic coolant flange, but won't be able to take the pic till next Wednesday.
-
I will snap pics of the MK2 stuff tomorrow if you don't have it yet.
Loved the pimp the glow plug write btw
-
might be able to help out for the mk1 pics, might be a few days delay though.
-
wow funny you should be doing an FAQ on that. Are you also covering the how to on replacing the pesky glow plug fusible link?
-
I got your pic of the mk1 coolant sensor. send me your email addy, and I'll get it to ya. ;)

Thanks all... vwaldon ;D gmail.com

mk1 pics sent ;D.
btw....I love my pimped glow plug circuit even though it doesn't run by the coolant sensor.....yet(needs to find ce1 cluster.....anyone?)

That's the right panel... what I'm looking for is an actual picture, since people seem to relate to pictures more so than drawings.
Thanks, tho.

I have a CE1 cluster. What do you need? I also have a CE2 cluster with a tach conversion.
-
Draft is up and running, btw, but is still a work-in-progress:

I've got some more pictures, text, and a wiring diagram to add.
In the meantime, comments welcomes, as always.

Thanks... I'm looking for a clear picture of the fuse/relay panel, so that I can circle where the glow plug relay lives.
-
Vince, my reply was for Lovethediez who was looking for a CE1 cluster. I can take some pics of my fuse relay panel also but won't be able to do it till Thursday.

Thanks and no hurry... only if you have time.

oh yeah, just wanted to say that the wire that should go from the glow plug relay to the coolant temp sensor (which I don't have ::)) should be blue/white; as per the bentley. saw the XXXX, but I don't think it changed for mk1's
-
I can get a pic of the plastic plug and the mark 2 fuse panel in the AM
-
What, no pics of Mk1s?

Very timely, Vince. I've just been dabbling with disconnecting my coolant temp sensor to see how it affects my GP performance. Which leads to one comment on your writeup: On your Step 3 in troubleshooting, you talk about disconnecting the sensor and then the relay should run for 20 sec. You then say that if it does, the relay is good. I assume you are also implying that the sensor is therefore bad? Might be good to state it explicitly.
Also, would you want to include the collected wisdom about fast / slow glows and relays here? Maybe the relay numbers and the GP numbers? I know this has appeared in a number of posts over time, and since your How To's end up being frequently referred to, maybe this would be an appropriate place to capture the info.
Lastly, maybe some simple suggestions for those wanting to wire up a separate GP indicator dash light...
Thanks again for all your work!

Great suggestions... some of which I'd thought of, some of which... not so much!!
In particular, I'm planning to add a step detailing how to double-check the coolant sensor with a multimeter.
Will add your thoughts in... thanks again!

What, no pics of Mk1s?
For the most part the MK1 setup is the same as an MK2, but if you notice any big differences holler and I'll update... I don't have an MK1 in the fleet at the moment. :'(

that's a good idea

I guess the relay is a replacement part

I am getting ready to fire up the car. There is the flange with the 2 pronged sensor for glowplugs I believe and I can't find a free wire to go to it. It is MKII 86 jetta. I just wonder if I hooked something else to it. All explination of the coolant flange sensors would be helpful.
PS I looked at vince's page he was making from this already. It said green wires go to it, but I can't find any ???
-
I think I figured it out. I am using a different coolant flange and I had the old one marked I think with green tape. I have the one connector marked with green tape. I will just have to find where the old flange is.
Would that disable the heater fan from working? I am having some trouble with that. I replaced the resistor when I did everything else and it should at least have full power at the highest setting even if the new resistor was bad out of the box.
Need help as I won't put this together until I figure out the heater fan.

Hopefully you can find what you need here. Feel free to do as you please with them

that is awesome tyler. That is my fuse pannel but not my flange. I have one 2 prong plug on the side and a brass one part connector on the top.
-
Sounds like yours is CE1

I have pictures of the plugs I am missing on the inside in the troubleshooting section. I will take pics and try to find out what I have in the engine bay. I figured out that the bentley is saying I have an A/C cut out and that is what I can't find an end for in the engine compartment. I don't know where it attaches as it is a dotted line in the bentley and I only have the coolant flange and the A/C compressor connection open.
