Found a crank on ebay has the journal sizes listed good or bad? I may get it depending on the condition of my crank, the reason being it beats machining costs any downs to getting one of these on ebay???

why do you need a crank? did you throw a rod? usually, if the crank ran before and it didnt have any spun bearings, usually its good to be used again.
take an old penny (before 1980) and rob the edge of it on the crank journals. if copper rubs off, then get it turned. if no copper rubs off, then its fine. if a LITTLE copper rubs off, just take some emery cloth and go to town polishing those journals. ive cleaned up some pretty bad cranks with just emery cloth.

Haven't pulled the crank yet, but when I do how will I know if I need to order oversize bearings or not as I don't know if the bearings are bad or not, mic it? I guess I really need to wait to pull the bottom end Dang! another tool I need to buy, the wife will not be happy ;D

the bearings will be the same size as og unless you have the crank ground down. smaller journals need oversize bearings to take up the space removed by machining.

I'd be worried if i was running one of those cranks, usually you get what you pay for, if i were you i would get a machine shop to go over the crank before using it. $35 is a great deal and i too would consider it if i needed a crank but i'd still prefer a used VW crank over a "MOFO CO" or other ebay brand/quality crank..

Assuming your crank has never previously been ground (very rare on these engines).
Both of my 1.5 engines have cranks in them that have never been turned. i thought they were just super tough and never needed machining. my crank thats in my car now has crushed a rod and piston and its still good to go.

I got on off ebay from some guy in Texas for about the same price shipped.. It was sold as "serviceable" meaing no crack and the thrust surface was good, but the rods and mains *might* need turned...Turned out the crank was absolutely fine.. I'd be scared of such and outfit as they probably just run them through a crank grinder regardless and hope the rest is good..

IT is pretty good.. But look at what the majority of items are that got positive feedback.. There were a few major engine parts in there, but not alot...
