Let me preface this by saying that I recently installed a boost gauge onto my kkk and discovered that my wastegate was probably stuck, giving me 15+ whenever the pedal is mashed down...having not really any time to do anything about it, I proceeded to take my car on a 1200km road trip to vancouver island, driving fast and in the upper rpm range...at around km 1150...
.I was at around 3k in 3rd going up a steep hill at probably around 20 psi when, of course, a loss of power and boost accompanied by a grey-black smoke cloud and a horrible scraping/screeching noise made me pretty sure that I'd toasted the bearing in the turbo...however, from the intake side there is no shaft play, and it spins fairly freely, but there does seem to be a oil mist accumulating around the cold side and there is a sort of new hiss coming from the engine all the time while accelerating...I've driven it a few hundred km's since but have not had the nerve to raise the boost very high..I'm pretty far from home, what are the chances this thing will make it back home for me..should I just startv looking for a junker turbo?
-
if it were the turbo, it would be very appearent. i bet you blew one of your boost hoses from the excessive boost. boost leaks have always plagued me. just got my car free of them recently. so now do you have any boost at all? probably not much if its a good sized hole in the hose.
-
When I pulled all the hoses off to take a look at the turbo, I didn't see any big holes, and spool-up seems just as good as it was before, and there is no more black smoke, I just haven't let it(the boost) get too high...most of the new oil is collecting around the tube to the intake manifold, I haven't really gotten home from work early enough to take a good look at it in the light....it was the scraping/grinding noise that really worried me...\
How does one tell if the shaft is snapped in there?
thanx to all

are you sure there is no "in and out" shaft play? my turbo made a scrapping noise when the compressor wheel was being pressed into the compressor housing at higher boost numbers...it ran nice and quiet until 7psi..then it screeched like crazy!!
-
its probably the thrust bearing telling you its time to get a new one. make sure there is no in and out shaft play. then if you still dont see anything, pull the turbo and inspect it.

OK, so an update : there is no in&out shaft play but there is (I dont know how I missed it) about a 16th of side play in the shaft itself ...the hissing noise is I think coming from where the intake elbow is bolted onto the intake manifold....it looks lie the PO permatexed the gasket...should I replace the turbo now or will it make it another 1200 km (on mountainous roads) so I get home to my spare one?

1/16th sounds normal to me.
How is the car running right now?
