Title: starter not engaging?

I just put an 02a tranny on my GTD, and when I turned the starter, it sounded like it was just spinning without engaging the flywheel.  I used the clutch and starter from the 02a (off an ABA from a mk3 golf).  Do I need some kind of spacer behind the clutch to bring it forward on this motor?

Nevermind.  It's just the shaft not kicking out to engage the flywheel.

Tap it with a plastic hummer while someone turns the ignition key.. Sometimes works
