Title: Missing Bolt - alternator mount
Post by: Jay on July 18, 2009, 12:39:12 pm
At the top of the alternator where it bolts to the engine I'm missing a bolt, I only noticed this when changing the belts today. What thread size/length etc should this bolt be? The bolt goes through the mount on one side, through the top of the alternator and out through another mount hole. I've got something else in there holding it up for now, but need to ideally know the correct bolt size etc.

Also is the alternator rack adjustor bolt a 20mm long/deep socket? I've managed to get the belt on tight enough to drive it for now, but will go get the correct size socket tomorrow. I know the bolt head on the end is 13mm, as were all the other bolts I removed today.

Nevermind, Found a long enough bolt for the top mount of the alternator and it fits the hole perfectly, a little too long but will hack saw that off soon enough. Also found out by trial and error that the toothed rack adjustor nut is 22mm.

Picking up a new set of sockets from 20mm - 32mm on pay day as none of the other sets I bought go past 19mm.

Since I am putting together my 1.6 now I know that most all the mounting bolts are M8-1.25 thread and most on the block are 16 or 20mm in length. Since I work for an industrial supply house that has millions of bolts, I am using stainless on most all the bolts that usually corrode or are fastening dissimilar metals.

Good to know you found it.
