Title: noisy injection pump...
Post by: monst on July 14, 2009, 01:59:39 pm
I have a noisy injection pump...
It seems pretty clear to me where it is coming from...
Initially, thought it was the water pump bearing....
now It seems to be coming from the injection pump.
right near the pully.....
   Is this a bearing.. bushing....
Anyway, what is the R & R on a worn Injection pump bearing.....
Is this something that can be done when I do the belt...

Monst

It could be your timing belt tensioner. Be very careful. You dont want that to break. Otherwise it may just be your alternator bearings. Take off the v-belt and run the engine very briefly and see if the noise is still there. If its not, then its your alternator or water pump.

There is a bushing in the front of the pump..   Rare for them to be noisy, but they can wear causing shaft play..   I'd follow airhead's advice, throw the V-belt off and see if the noise goes away..   Then check the timing belt tensioner..  You may even want to check the intermediate shaft for end play...  Had one of those knock about on me once upon a time..  It just would seem odd for the IP to make noise and still work...

I really doubt it's the IP.

Most likely if your pump bushings were worn to the point they made noise it would be leaking pretty bad also because the shaft would ruin the seal.  By all means don't let that tensioner get to the point it will come apart on you.  Also a timing belt too tight will make a noise also similar to a turbo whine, just a thought if you adjusted it lately.

  All good points thanks!
I'll drop the v-belts and see what happens.
I do have to change the T-belt again. I got about 55,000 on it.
When I changed it last I got a new OEM tensioner.
I heard something from someone about buying a belt that is rated to last longer.
This was for an A3... Anybody, know if a belt for the 1.6L can  be purchased that
last longer than 60,000 miles?
I'll post again when I know more about my dilema

Monst

Did you try to pinpoint and localize the noise with a stethoscope (long screw driver against your ear)?

I got a new Kia Spectra for my girlfriend last Summer and Kia doesn't even recomend changing the belt for 90,000 mi.  There is no way I'm gonna let a belt on an engine that long especialy with a 16 valve engine with variable valve timing.  I think 55-60 thousand is plenty for one on any engine.

My pump on the one Quantum is definitely noisy. Sounds like a rumbling dry ball bearing race [I know , doesn't exist ::) ] coupled with some thumping. There is no side play in the bush and no dieel leaks Definitely not the waterpump, nor the vac pump, or the alternator. It's been like it for years. I have another pump to swap in when I have time. Not a lot of time to do in itself, but, I want a commitment free period, with no long trips to follow...
Nasty knocking on engine suppresses the noise. This also has not  been resolved. Sounds like valve shims, but they are all set a little tight if anything. Been like it for a long time, and does vary somewhat. Big end/little end perhaps... Engine passed emissions test/smoke test with 0.3% obscurity, not bad on a 1984/5 engine IMO ;D

Just a follow up on this one here......
It ended up being the water pump.
