I am having trouble getting the engine to run smooth. It will start but it runs like it is a cylinder or two down, ive havent set the timing perfect but ive tried timing with crank and can TDC and have tried about 5 teeth each way on the injection pump. I know this sounds odd but it should atleast run smooth being close, right?
-
WOW!
No. You need to see a vince waldon write up on how to do the timing. were talking a maximum range of .085-1.120 on the IP. One tooth would be way more than that let alone 5 teeth. Usually the IP is set between .095-1.05.

You let the lifter bleed down after you installed it right?
Each tooth changes the timing a lot. You need to use a dial gauge
-
yeah, i let the lifter bleed down. ive got a dial indicator, i guess i will have to break it out and put it to use. thanks
-
I would suggest to remove the cam and take out the lifters one at a time and flush them thoroughly so they are free to spring about, install all back and time your engine properly it will fight to start initially and sound horrible once started, but will quieten out after 10 minutes or so
-
alright, i used Vince Waldon's "how to time the injection pump". i set it at .039", it started up ok and seems to be running better as it runs longer, just as Zulfiqar had said. :-\

You probably have air in the system that needs to work itself out
-
I would suggest to get cracking to find out your air leak..
did you flush out the lifters, - the engine will buck due to reduced airflow initially but will come up to speed once the lifters pump up - they take about 10 minutes to fully bleed out any air in them.. gotta wait for that by holding the fuel increase lever on the pump..
if your engine will not hold steady at 2000 revs - you have fuel supply problems.

well, I let it set overnight. Went out and started it up and it runs/idles great now. not to chattery, no smoke. And drives good too. I guess the lifters bled down overnight from letting it run yesterday and then setting awhile? but either way guys, thanks for all the help.

Glad to hear you are back on the road
