Title: Wastegate on K14
Post by: ilikevwdiesel on July 01, 2009, 06:05:45 am
Can you adjust the wastegate on a K14? I was romping on my pickup yesterday and I could feel the wastegate open, I'd like it to stay closed a little longer. Any gurus out there with some thoughts? The motor is a US Ecodiesel, there's no blowoff valve on the intake manifold.

just disconnect the WG, or add a manual boost control. read the FAQ.
its in there. this is the third "how do i get more boost" thread i have read this week.

you dont need more boost for your stock fuel setting. too much boost for a certain fuel level is not good. if it smokes, adjusting your boost so it just barely smokes is about optimum boost-to-fuel levels. so unless you are gonna want more fuel and less fuel mileage, just leave it alone. you could probably get 5 more psi out of it the way it is. but you have a ECO fuel injector pump, and they are RETARDED. you could make way WAY more power with a real TD pump, they have a bigger pump head in them. if you really wanted some power, take and disconnect the wastegate, add an intercooler, some turbo injectors and a turbo pump and really have a ripper.

I have a 1.6 TD pump on it. Guess I should have said THAT.

The waste gate on this k14 has a threaded rod with a lock nut on it. Is that an adjustment? Will turning it one way or the other change the opening pressure of the wastegate?

Yes loosen the locknut off and wind the threaded rod in the ways for more boost ie clockwise

well I installed a boost gauge and drove the truck before attempting any adjustment on the wastegate. It went to about 12psi. After I wound the screw in it made close to 20psi. The engine is a stock 91 1.6 eco diesel US model engine with about 200k mi., except that it has a injection pump from an 84 TD motor and a 2" straight back exhaust with no muffler. Does anyone know what a safe level of boost is for a stock engine? What can they take and for how long? Thanks

My opinion: assuming you watch your engine temperatures and have a properly torqued head with a good headgasket you can probably run 20 psi all day long.

Should you decide to start adding fuel to your extra boost a pre-turbo EGT gauge is an excellent investment.

Thanks Vince. I'm not going to mess with the pump it runs fine now, plenty of power for me. The headgasket looks to weeping a tiny bit of oil below the waterneck on the front of the engine. If it craps out I'll replace it and install a stud kit. Anyone know where to get the best price on a stud kit for a 1.6?
