Title: back to square 1
Post by: jettabrendan on April 04, 2009, 07:41:13 pm
so got my car running beautifully... BUT coolant is still coming out of the expansion tank. New headgasket was put on and everything so idk. The only thing i think it could be is the thermostat is toast and its stuck shut? if it was anything more serious like a crack it would be instant when i start it? it takes about 15-20 min untill the coolant comes over the top of the tank. it starts and runs like new.

Or you didn't bleed all the air out of the system...

or the coolant cap is no longer working properly. Have you pressure tested it?

this is why it got pulled off the road, it was doing this when diagnosed with a bad head gasket.. so i changed it and its doing the same thing. the bottom rad hose was cold, top one gets very hot, so it could very well be an air bubble. Im gunna buy a new thermostat anyways, flush and refill it and buy a new cap, if that does not solve my problem, anyone wanna buy a 91 turbo jetta? LOL

drill a tiny hole in the thermostat before you put it in...1/16" or 1/8" no need to go bigger and it will help the air get out. It also won't flow enough to overly cool the engine and the stat will still work.

FIXED!! i changed the thermostat, flushed, buddy noticed the pressure cap was missing its o-ring. car holds coolant. it runs pretty good but i think the timing is a bit retarded. It dosent idle like my 92, slow kind of lopey idle.

try the sensor in the rad. jump the 2 wires together. if the fan turns on, thats the prob. if the fan dont turn on, start digging in the wiring. and you could also run a wire from the batt to it just to see that the fan isnt your problem.

im pretty sure its the resistor but i could be wrong. If i take a wire and go from + on the batt to the top wire on the resistor, it turns on but it stays on untill i unhook the wire.
