I'm building a power packed motor for mr MK1 golf - decent intake and VNT15.
I have AAZ and GTD engines at my disposal - what would you use as the donor?
People have suggested AAZ head on GTD block - why? why not use the complete AAZ - is it purely the revvy feel of the 1.6 that people prefer?
-
The straight AAZ will have more torque. You will have more power low end, especially if you are adding a vnt. It will still rev, just not as high or as fast as a 1.6 although with a vnt thats another story. It also has better flowing ports on the head then the 1.6 .
The straight up 1.6 will make it power higher up in the rpm scale and rev a bit higher. Not as much low end torgue as the 1.9.
The 1.6/1.9 combo is a hybrid that gives you the ability to rev higher with the bonus of a better flowing head and slightly lowered compresson due to the larger head. The lower compression allows for higher boost levels.
The 1.6/1.9 combo is better then the sttaight 1.6 hands down if you are wanting power. The aaz is bigger. Displacement is important. It will not rev like the other two due to the heavier crank but it will give you power down low which will result in a different driving experience. One of the main concerns with the 1.6 lower end is strength. The block will flex and the rods are questionable with high boost at low rpms. Power and boost need to come on later.
Are you interested in max hp or a fast around town driver?
-
I like lazy - fast.
I normally drive, short shifting at about 2500rpm, get into top gear as soon as possible.
Grunt it around on torque 95% of the time.
Nice to have the reserve of revs there for 'educating' petrol heads.

go with a turbo 1.5! not much for bottom end, but once the turbo spools on mine, it gets with the program. and lust by ear, it sounds like they turn about 6 grand pretty easy. my 1.5 turbo motor has way more balls than my 1.6 engines. but an AAZ with a FN 5 spd (.71 5th) would be pretty ***in too. have enough torque to pull ANY hill in 5th gear. and any vw diesel likes a VNT. throw a gasser intake on it when you build it, unless you go with the aaz head. then you could use a 1y manifold.
-
If torque is what you want, better make it AAZ.
Just make sure you fit a new crank bolt in there.

You could have the nose modified to accept the tdi sprocket while it is apart. Not sure if you could lighten the crank. It would take very good machining and a good balance job when finished. Lighten what you can, polish the rods, lighten the crank, turn the IM shaft, lighten the flywheel etc. There is good power to be had out of an AAZ. The vnt will play a big role in low end grunt. You have access to many good parts over there.

*totally agrees with the lightening and balancing statement above*
i took and hand balanced a friends 22r toyota engine with his marijuana scale, and for being a stock engine, it sure had more power after being balanced. its amazing what you can do with a scale, dremel, and file..

Wasn't a surprise how much difference there was from rod to rod, piston to piston ? It was to me the first engine I "blue printed" as we used to call it.
-
i dont remember how much of a difference it was, but i remember removing ALOT of metal from a couple different pistons and rods. i was 17 when i did that, and lets just say ive crammed alot more knowledge in my head since then. i just wish there was more space up there in that thing between my ears.

We don't get the 1.5 over here, but the 1Y mani looks favourite too.
Think I'm getting a plan together......
AAZ pump with 10mm head
VNT 15
AAZ engine - with a bit of work on it
1Y intake.
That'll do me. :D
-
What kind of work on the aaz? Head porting if done correctly will give you the ability to have great gains. The done correctly is the important part. We dont have too many people on this side of the pond that are knowledgable on serious vw diesel head porting. How about over there?
-
I crossed an AAZ head with a 1.6TD MF block with magnificent results (magnificent compared to what it was anyways). With a ported and polished 1.9 head it has loads of low end power that it never had before and will take you to 70mk/hr in 2nd gear in just a couple seconds.
But, im sure everyone's mileage varies ;)
-
i think an aaz will bring more power in the end and be more reliable, it is a bigger engine you know, i am going to do a 1.6/1.9 just cause i like to be different, although it seems alot of people have been doing this haha.
-
thats why you gotta be really tricky, and make a 1.5/1.6/1.9, but someone has probably built one of those by now.

yeah i'd love to see 1.5 internals in a 1.6 block a 1.9 head. something i'd like to do if i ever finish my jetta is to build an na engine to high hp just to show it can be done. but i gotta build one motor before i start talking poop like that haha.
-
i say AAZ
all the time/effort you would put into a 1.6 is better served to a AAZ.
AAZ w/ extensive head work, with a gt28rs ball bearing turbo will give you a nice broad power band, and with a giles pump i think 4900-5000 should be attainable
just my .02
-
I looked at them all, and went AAZ. The bottom end grunt is truly spectacular for daily driving and , with a 2-stage boost controller, I get top end when needed. 10 psi daily and 25 psi when needed. :D :D :D :D
-
well, ive got an ancient N/A 1.5 thats got 22 psi going to it with a fiber gasket. it has quite a bit of power. over 100 hp for sure, cause it smokes hondas and toyotas too good to be very weak. and i wind that thing to the bolts, and nothing has ever let go. except a block, but we wont go there, it took 37psi to do that.

Hi Reg,
What you thinking of for target power? Also where will you source your VNT? Will be watching your build up

Having driven the 1.9 and the 1.6 in tuned form now, I can confirm the 1.9 is a lifeless dull slog of an engine.
1.6 it is.
-
having driven a AAZ sans turbo (dont ask how) it was a dull dead dog on cocaine..
build a 1.6 wiz what ze germans call a gross turbolader mit VNT a 10mm peugoet pump head SD274 nozzles @155 bar and a free exhaust, couple that to a GTI gearbox and you are in business
-
hmmmm, I have 1.5 internals, a 1.6 block... who has a 1.9 head for me? can you run a 1.9 with mechanical lifters?
-
yes I believe you can. I think sourkraut on here is doing it.
-
1.9 head flows better than the 1.6 head. It has larger intake/exhaust ports. They're a different shape than the 1.6 ports though (D-shaped) so you should use 1.9 manifolds (intake especially)...
I believe the 1.9 hydro head is a direct swap for the 1.6 hydro head, so anything you'd do to use a hydro head on a mech block applies.

1.6 Block. 1.9 AAZ Head. Hands down Solid Set up with Great Power.
-
1.9 exhaust ports are identical to the 1.6

Can you expound on "correctly done", please? My AAZ head is just off & I'd like to have some port work done to it... I haven't looked for a machine shop yet, but there's a VW shop I trust in Long Island & I'm going to ask them for a recommendation.

What about this in an N/a setup?

So if i were to add say a K03 while adding the AAZ head and a Giles pump.. then it would be worth it? (Thats what i plan on doing in the future)
What about this in an N/a setup?
I wouldn't want it. The 1.9 head will make starting hard with it's lower compression. Without taking advantage of boost, it wouldn't be worth it.

ok, so from what i have picked up, it is not important to mirror finish the ports. and also you dont really want to re shape the ports at all. basically you just want to clean up the casting flaws out of the port. smooth it down a bit. maybe open it up a little, but stay away from reshaping unless you are SUPER CONFIDENT with a dremel. all ive ever used was a dremel with a flexy shaft and one of those small sanding drums. i actually could feel the difference in my tired 1.6 when i cleaned up the ports.
-

Coulda been some placebo effect, no? LOL kidding. Well obviously you will feel power if the engine has to work that much less to get air in.. it will be able to use that energy else where :)
-
well, the port castings were some of the worst i have ever seen. a couple of the ports had spots that had to be taken down almost an 8th inch in spots to be level with the runner floors and walls.
-
YIKES... :P The machine shop wants $850 for a mild polish & valve job. For that money, I'll buy a bag of Dremel sanding drums and spend a day or two doing it my own damn self. Gotta Giles pump to pay for soon. Wish I could find my flex drive...
My AAZ ports are actually pretty smooth, except where the internal sections join together, there's a seam that needs to go away, and a nasty little lip just beyond the steel valve seat insert.
-
Well, I did it my self. 8) Check the build thread: http://www.vwdiesel.net/forum/index.php?topic=19739.msg156850#new
Fairly painless, it just takes a while... make that a day or three.
-
I might add - the 1.9 head has bigger prechambers which can handle more heat than the 1.6 too.
1.6 block with 1.9 head revs fast, gets lots of flow and will be able to take more of a beating.
