Title: Gauges?
Post by: gunrtd on February 02, 2009, 11:21:58 am
All of the sudden, the tach and the speedo have gone limp. Completely dead. Happened at the same time so I figure it must be the power feeding the two?
Car is a 95 Jetta.
Any leads?

diesel viagra ?  LOL

The tach is powered from the w lead on the alternator, so separate power.  How are the others on the cluster ?

Do you have a bently for the 95' ? Mine is for prior, so I can't trace the 2 gauges you have an issue with..

My '95 gas car had some problems like that when my ground was bad to the engine...

Even though the tach gets its signal from the W terminal, it still gets its power from the same place as the speedo!

I figure it's power  -  but I checked all the fuses, and they all look good.

Most likely the cluster has packed it in... simultaneous speedo/tach disappearance is a common failure mode.

Search for "cluster" on the Golf/Jetta III forum on the Vortex and you'll read story after story.

Here's the pinout (sadly, all the wires are the same color  ):

As you can see there's only one supply line (off the ignition switch), so if your other gauges and lights work you know that it's fine.

There *are* two grounds (pins 3 and 5), however, so might be worth checking.  Otherwise, there's probably a junkyard in your future.
