where can i get one from? how much are they? how do i fit it? do i have to drill / tap the cast exhaust manifold??
does any1 have one 2nd hand??
-
The search is your friend... there have been many posts about this in the past 10 months, and longer. Short answer - Air Craft Spruce is one place... I drilled mine the second time in a drill press as the first time the hand drill snagged and cracked the manifold.

That's one option.
The most cost effective i found was this.. These are my own pictures ... (this was pretty dang easy to do also)

The probe threads in there =D Remember to use antisieze! just be careful not to drill & tap your hole in such a fasion that you cant' fit the probe between the block and the manifold! mine was almost, could have been, a tight fit.
I like the gauge, it's bright, responsive, has a warning light, does a little dance when you give it power :P
-
How much will this guage be posted to uk then?? as the price is in $
-
Also look for VDO gauges over there. Save yourself the shipping charge.

cool , will do matey, cheers for the heads up. However, i spoken the peeps at the above link, and think the price is very very reasonable, and will no doubt be ordering one from them, when i get paid :-)
cheers peeps.

Does this kit come with the probe as well? or is that seperate? its not shown in the pic on the site i dont think.
-
It show's it and says...
"Includes sender and mount (everything that is in the second picture). This gauge mounts in a 2 3/8 inch hole."
-
I think i need a nap.. it was right there.. lol my bad for missing it. thanks Zukgod :P

I hope my expert drilling pics were of help too :D booyah!

how do you like the guage smokey? is it currently on your car? does it show even the smallest increase at the pedal on the read out? it def looks cool, and yeah awesome drillz skillz :P
-
WELLLLLLLLLLLLLL
I only have a DP as the exhaust so i ONCE saw 600F but as soon as i backed off the pedal the dial went back to rest.
But you can trick the gauge (when i had it out) into thinking the temp was super hot and the warning light is super bright.
its my brightest gauge by far and the coolest looking. well...
the oil temp gauge totally disappears when the light turns off...
i duno :P
I'll know how well it really works when i get an exhaust pipe on the car but im thinking 1,000F is going to be the hottest for what im running.
I'll post some vids of all sorts of stuff when i insure it.
ps. pride my self on those drillz skillz! you shoulda seen my block! drilled those steam holes like demz were ma bizatches
-
mad skillz with tha drillz mate, i just read ur entire thread, very inspiring i must say :-)

whats a temp you should stay away from over 1000

1600F pre-turbine is a good max temp, and should only be sustained for a few seconds or so.
-
The max i've ever seen was half of that

Thought TD blocks were good up to around 1450? or am i thinking n/a?
1600F IS HOTT LOL

Aluminum tends to melt at 660.32 °C. (1220.58 °F)
Keep THAT in mind :P

Obviously, the inconel in turbine wheels starts to deform at about 1600° F. So much to think about! Lol

don't forget that just because the air is a certain temp, it doesn't mean that the surrounding parts will be at that temp as well... due to the velocity and characteristics of air itself, 1600F for very brief periods, should be okay.
-
your brave!! I only dare take mine to 1400*.....anything over that makes me stress!!!
it's all good until you burn a hole in your piston!!
-
Is prothe a good person to buy from?
I'm thinking of buying a couple of EGT gauges and boost, oil temp/pressure too.
Ryan
-
've had great success with his EGT, oil temp and boost gauges.
-
I agree, it doesn't go low enough. Plus 60% of the guage is useless, you'll only use up to the 1600* mark, and you won't be in that range everyday anyway... The way i figure i want to only buy a guage with enough numbers i can use after that its useless to me... On postive note, Prothe's guage looks good though
-
and it's affordable.
and a bright red warning light comes on above 1400f (i think its 1400) i know it comes on if something has happened to the wires (ie. it becomes unplugged or severed from the probe)
-
so whats a good gauge to go with that doesn't eat at your pocket
-
i wouldnt think there is much need to know how low the temps really are
as long as you know soon enough things are going tits up!!
for the price its a billy bargian, as long as it warn you in time, and not post dettonation :?
something i noticed, was someone saying the egts ran higher with no exaust pipe??
i was gunna do a side exite pippe, which would make it about 2 mtrs total length!
would that be enough for gasses to escape or will i need it longer??
will be without cat ect!!!
thanks

Seriously, i dont know why everyone refuses to listen to me. Prothes gauge is responsive. I like it a lot. You can push your foot down and see the dial move accordingly. It can't predict what you're going to do ...
and the gas temp IS NOT the temp of your internals ... It's the temp they WILL be if you hold that temp for long.
I like prothe's gauge. I don't give a hoot what anyone else says who doesn't even use it. :P I do agree that it does go uselessly. knowing your egt is 600 or 0 doesn't make any difference to me at least. 600 in my books is pretty cold for egt. You have a fair bit of leeway in fueling before you start to venture from 600 to something dangerous. the VDO one is IMHO a perfect egt gauge but it's a lot more money.
PS. egt will never ever be higher with LESS restriction of the exit flow of exhaust gases. That just doesn't make any logical sense what so ever.
You wanna reduce egt and still add fuel? more boost, water/meth injection, a bigger turbo, a BIG downpipe, straight pipe, less bends.
my 2 cents which i've experienced first hand about 5 days ago.
-
If you do not cool down the turbo to 300°F or so, then the oil will coke up the bearings and turbo life will be shortened. Cool down times are often not intuitive. The simple reason that Prothe's gauge does not have a cool down range makes it useless to me. I greatly prefer the Westach gauges from Aircraft Spruce for the specific reasons I quoted above. $80 for the complete kit is a whole lot better deal to me than Prothe's kit.
Andrew
I'm with Andrew on this one.. even with 100% synthetic oil's 450 degrees, you need that range the Westech gives you.
-
diesel are known to have a long long life...if your turning up the power you really need a good gauge...$100 gauge can save your $500 turbo or add lots of extra life to the turbo....I'm all for saving cash and doing a budget build..but sometimes you need to spend the money!!
-
I agree, there are somethings you can do economically but I do not belive gauges are one.
-
I had no idea that Aircraft Spruce's set up was $80?!?! I thought they were all hundreds.

Many of us building aircraft from plans are real cheapskates !!! Here's the plane I was building, but my wife wants me to start over with one that lands on water since we moved to a lake...

for some reason airplane building is not something I would go "cheap" on either!!
-
post the link of the gauge! can't find the right one i must be blind
-
Does it come with the complete kit? everything i did to makt it work
thxs for the link
-
(mk2) im putting the gauge just above the heat control
-
Right now, for my egt gauge, I'm using a $45 ebay 12v digital temp controller, with aircraft spruce thermocouple. Works great.
-

Cheap is a relative term in aircraft... if you build from plans, you can make each part one by one. You should still use aircraft quality materials if the part is structural, but for non-structural why use a $63.60 2"x4" spruce when a $1.77 stud from Home Depot will work just as good?
The gauges are the same thing.. an $80 EGT setup is cheaper than the $66,745.00 Garmin G900X system we would love to display our EGT next to the Highway in the Sky GPS :-D

yeah prothe's gauge starting at 600 and going to 24,000 is pretty stupid now that i've driven a bit. but it does what i want it to do. so im happy. That's a neat idea with mixing and matching the sender with other types of displays. I like that.

I PERFER THE ONE AT KERMITDI.COM
