Who here can rebuild turbos or recommend someone in the PNW? I would like to get my Garrett T3 rebuilt as it has a good amount of shaft play.
Thanks
Thomas

you could do it yourself???
I did and it's pretty darn easy....

just make sure u send it out to a turbo shop to have it balanced after u rebuild it. i just sent mine to G- Pop shop in arizona and it was about $325 which i dont think is bad

325 for balancing?theres a guy on ebay that does them for cost of the kit.he owns a turbo shop.

I've always wondered, how do they actually balance a turbo? Do they take the assembled shaft and set it in some kind of device like a v block and see where it stops when it is rotated and cut material so it stops at random positions or something like that, something similar to a R/C airplane propeller balancer ? :?:
-
they balance the shaft with an electronic machine that spins it and shows where material needs to be removed to balance.

No, that was for a complete rebuild. i was just stating that a balance should be performed after a rebuild.

Something similar to a mini wheel balancer type thing then, I know for a fact they are accurate if they're calibrated.

Alamo Turbocharger went far out of their way to find me the correct KKK parts for my K14. They're in the PNW (Kent, WA) and Canada.

I did my own with a kit from Gpopshop.com and had the wheels balanced for $65 at the local diesel injection/turbo shop. Works great been boosting 20+ since. I'd recomend getting the 360 degree thrust plate.

I've not asked why but for some reason Giles doesnt recomend the 360 I'm told..?
Tyler??

Better ask Giles, I'm not sure
-
Oh man!! What help are you???
-
If you change the oil seals do you have to get it balanced afterwards?
-
Its always recommended but it also (as far as I'm concerned) depends on the turbo.
KKK balances the shaft and turbine separately from the compressor wheel so I don't worry about those. On a T3 I'm ULTRA careful to make sure it goes back together the sane way it came apart.
-
how do you guys get the compressor wheel off the cartridge?
-
does anyone happen to have a link or a step by step DIY to turbo rebuilding? i wouldn't mind reading up on some turbo rebuilds that people have done. I'm all for learning new things, but only if i know i can do it properly.

how do you guys get the compressor wheel off the cartridge?
I use a propane torch to slightly heat the compressor wheel then I use a brass hammer and punch to drive it apart.
