batt fully charged and has held voltage over night. put on car and very slow cranking and wont start. attach my gti via good quality jump leads, and it still cranks slowly. to slow. i can keep cranking and cranking so batt got planty off charge.

My money is on the starter. Try a rollstart if you can.
rollstart? you mean bump start? yes i can bump it to get it going. just had my mums astra on it and the gti and she started pretty much steaight away. and aslong as i dont let her get cold she'll start fine.
i read somewhere that to thinker oil can effect a diesel in the cold? so thinking of getting higher quality oil

15w40 is kinda like molasses on a really cold night... so the starter has to work harder to get it going. another good reason to let the car idle for about a minute just to let oil flow to where its needed, and take it easy for the first few minutes of driving until it thins out a bit.
synthetics like 0w40 are much better. they flow right away and some have pour points of -50C which is arctic temps that we'll never (hopefully) see

You shouldn't have a problem at 32F (0C), last year I ran 15w-40 all year and started as cold as -40F (-40C) after being plugged in. This year I'm running 10w-30 and it'll start at -50F after being plugged in a couple hours.
If your's won't crank fast enough you have bad connection, starter or a battery that can't put out enough amps. If your starters worn out it'll be weaker for sure.
