Title: IP leak and part identification
Post by: okquantum on December 27, 2008, 02:10:14 pm
82 quantum coupe with a 1.6 TD from and 83 quantum wagon.

I've noticed a leak from the injection pump, and have read several posts
about leaky pumps and looked at IP parts diagrams, but still don't have
the info I'm looking for.  Perhaps someone out there can help.

The leak is coming from the front of the upper part of the pump, i.e. the
drive pulley end.  I thought it was the shaft seal, and changed it, but did
not cure the leak.  The leak is actually coming from between the housing
and the nut which is in the very centre of upper part of the housing and
facing the drive pulley.  I've noticed that on most parts diagrams the nut is
a normal six sided nut, and have also looked at other pumps and they also
have a six sided nut.  However, on mine the fastener is round with a slot
so it appears that it should be tightened with a screwdrver!!!  In any case,
the mounting flange is in the way, and I would prefer to not remove the
pump, but will if I have to.

So..., two questions.

1.  What is this adjustment (I notice that there is an allen screw inside)
and I assume the outside nut is loosened, then the allen screw adjusts
something (delivery pressure/volume???).

2.  Could I try and tighten this with some kind of grip tool (vice-grip)
without fear of screwing something up?

I should also note that the engine runs fine, lots and lots of power and
42 mpg  (Imperial gallons)

Thanks and regards,

Thanks Andrew,
Would that o-ring be part of the reseal kit?  I'm wondering what else
I should do to the pump while I have it out.

I would have you reseal the pump, but I think shipping from Canada to
Flagstaff and return would not be practical.  Do you have any
reccomendations for us up here?  (British Columbia)
