Title: Engine block expansion plug Q.
Post by: Dakotakid on December 08, 2008, 10:04:08 pm
There is an expansion/soft plug which fits into the transmission end of the 1.6 block. Removal of it allows access to the gear end of the intermediate shaft. Question: is this plug identical (36.6 mm) to the three coolant plugs on the firewall side of the block?

Do you guys use blue locktite when you insert these?

On my 1.5 it is exactly the same (36.6mm) as the other three. I would guess the 1.6 is the same... but that's just a guess.

I used a thin layer of blue RTV sealant on the plugs. If they fit correctly and the mating surfaces of the holes are clean, you shouldn't need any sealant. But, it never hurts to have an extra bit of insurance against leaks.

I did some digging on internet: aviation grade permatex. Hope I can get it in a small amount.
Thanks 79

You can and it's not very expensive. I bought a small container at the local Napa.
