Post by: ObscuredByClouds on November 15, 2008, 10:46:10 am
Are the con rod bolts TTY? I have an 86 1.6td

Regardless, what is the torque spec?

Is the maximum ring gap wear 1.00mm?

Yes, they are TTY. The torque spec is 22 lbs. ft. plus a quarter turn. Max ring gap of any ring is 1.00 mm.

I also have 76.50 rings, my pistons have 76.48 stamped on them.. does that mean my rings are wrong?

sound right! did you put a ring in a cylinder and check the gap?

Call the dealer and get stock bolts. I think they are $2-$5 a piece

Don't forget to hone the block if you are installing new rings

There are some crankshaft bolts that are not TTY although I don't think they stock them anymore. The non-TTY crank bolts look like regular hex bolts with a big washer, while the newer style TTY are 12-sided bolts.

My 91 TD has a non-TTY crank bolt but I wouldn't recommend it cuz it has come loose before despite being torqued 30 lbs over. Luckily I caught it before disaster happened.

Yup, I believe that all non-TTY crank bolts have been discontinued and the only ones you can get from the dealer are 12-point TTY.

Or so I'm told...

Aff! You guys are heroes finding the conrod bolts for 2-5 a piece. They're $15.55 from VW.. I CAN'T pay that. Fuucking obsurd.. where can I get them cheaper?

I have a 6 point crank pulley bolt I guess I'll reuse it and see.

I think my set was $80ish...

damn ARP!

I just bought a 6-pt crank bolt for my '79 1.5 from the dealer... it was only 89 cents! Of course, the washer was around $6.50- kinda odd.
