For sale locally I have found a : Custom built 1.9 litre turbo diesel VW engine. Built from 1.6 litre block, with an Oettinger crank, rods and pistons. Cylinder head is Oettinger big valve diesel. ip is 1.6td "not working", I don't yet know what turbo he has on it...
Just my own intuition would tell me that if you were going to put this kind of $ into an engine, it would make a lot of sense to at least start with a 1.6td block - but the only difference between the n/a and td I recall is hydraulic lifters, so....
any thoughts on what I could expect from this engine, if this is a quality rebuild? (guy claims to be certified vw tech, that this was his home project) how long could I expect an engine like this to last?
anyone have experience with this 1.9 oettinger head ?
any other thoughts about putting a 1.9 head on a 1.6 N/A block?
thank you very much!

I don't know of any factory VW turbo diesel engine that was built without oil squirters - 1.6NA blocks did not have oil squirters in them to aid in keeping the pistons cooled - so there must be a good reason for their implementation. Durability depends on lubrication and keeping engine parts the right temperature with that in mind I would want to look for an engine that did have oil squirters if running turbo on it.

even if you don't buy it, please try to take a few pictures, it might just be a normal 1.9 head, as it already has bigger valves and airflow than the 1.6.
oettinger crank?? why?
