I can't find the specs for that, how much is too much?
I can feel some, but that's subjective..
when I took the IM shaft out this is what I found:

the bearing surface is scratched, bu smooth, I can't feel irregularities with my nails, the oil seal surface is a different story, it has those two nasty grooves. the other end looks new.
usable?
-
just dropped it at the machinist to lighten it up, I'll go there again to see what they can do about those grooves, and drop a few more parts
-
thanks, but what about the play? how much is OK?

No specs for you, but in out (pass side to driver's side) play is normal. Up/down play should be non-existent. If you have up-down play, then you'll need to get oversized bearings and ream them in-place as libbybapa noted.

Bentley specs 0.25mm (0.0098in") for axial play on the 1.6s. I believe it is even more on the AAZs but that bentley is at work right now so I can't check.
-
thanks a lot! I'll measure it asap.
I see I must get a bentley :( I already have Chiltons, and haynes (mk2 and mk3), but both are almost useless for anything more than an oil change.
-
well, I realized I couldn't measure the play because I already had dropped the IM shaft at the machinist yesterday...
but, this is what I got today:

going to measure play now.

wohooo!!! 0.14mm of side to side and up-down play, measured without the outer plate and seal.
not very good, but acceptable.
also took out the seal, I don't like this design, we have 1cm of sealing surface and the seal only contacts in one point.
thats why I had a groove on the outer seal.
