Title: Cam nuts torque specs?
Post by: Smokey Eddy on August 13, 2008, 08:44:14 pm
Can anyone shout me the torque specs for the cam nuts on a 1.6 hydraulic head.

I can spin the lifters freely and i put a wrench on one and it turned relatively easily and left me with a  :( /   face...
also, there are very slight circles on the pistons as if the valves hit them at some point but very very faintly. They seat alright for being as old as they are but i've never taken them apart from the head to really take a look. The car still runs so i don't think they got damaged toooo too badly. I'm waiting for a new head anyways but i was just curious

cheers,
Ed.

15 Ft/lbs if they are the same as a 1.9, which they probably are.
Title: 34 ft/lbs

My 1.6L Bradly books quotes 34 ft/lbs. That is what I used yesterday. It felt right.

Yeah, I thought you were talking about the cam nut torq for the PULLEY :-) That's the 34 ft/lb - not the tiny bearing caps. Yeah, you'd likely snap them off if you did 34 ft/lb for the cam bearing nuts...

I have been bitten by this before. A helicoil kit and battery drill using the cam cap as a guide and Lots of carefull rag stuffing to catch the swarf then an oil change worked fine, thats 45,000 miles ago. 8)

Jesus my cam and crank nuts i tighten until i think to my self (ok no more or else bad things will happen) which is way more than 34 ft/lbs according to my torque wrench. 34 really isn't that much. And i can't BELIEVE the cam nuts are alright so loose but i guess its all machined so perfectly and perfectly balanced it doesnt need to be pointlessly tight. thanks guys prob. solved. She runs alright now with new metal 1.9HG and oil. Still has issues starting hot though... oh well rebuild soon

FWIW, I know of several times that the cam pulley has slipped with the 33 ft. lb. spec. I torque mine to 45.

Well, now you've got me thinking Andrew. What about the 33 ft. lbs. for the IM shaft? Should that also be torqued to 45? It may also be helpful to point out that the 12 sided bolt w/o washer for the crankshaft sprocket to crankshaft is a stretch bolt and should not be re-used. Correct?
