Can I just remove the power steering pump and attach the hoses together, fill it up and use my car? The ps pump I got has the wrong flange on it and I don't have a gear puller, and don't want to buy one. Please tell me that this will work, and my fuel mileage will increase and there will be peace in the middle east.... Thanks everyone

why not just put a non-power steering rack? less weight and all ;)

no time right now. I probably will in the future, I just want to know if I can drive it awhile like this. And aren't there a few things that I need to switch to manual? Thanks

It would be hard as crap to turn. The racks are geared and advantaged differently, turning a PS rack without the power assistance is a PITA.

and dangerous, as it can lock without warning if it fails ( I tried it on my Clio, similar system, real scary)

You'll be fine as long as there is fluid in the rack.

My PS pump went south one day; it was squirting fluid strait toward the hot section of the turbo through the vent in the ps tank cap. What a smoke show! :shock: All I could think of to get me going again was to just cut the PS belt off. I ran it without the pump spinning for a few months before replacing the pump. No harm could have been done and it was not even hard to steer; it made no difference on the road but it was a little heavy when not or barely moving.

power steering without power=better be using your man-arms
manual steering=man-arms not necessarily required.

I took it for a drive and it wasn't to bad at all. Steering while sitting is a bit tough, but not unbearable, when moving it is not bad at all. What does it take to changeover to manual steering? Thanks for the input.

a new rack, depending on the splines of the rack, a new knuckle from column to rack, the new rack may come with new tie rods, I don't know about tie rod ends but might as well get some...
you'll have to drop your subframe a tad to squeeze in/out the rack....
remove the lines, tank, pump, etc....
it's a fair sized job, but not impossible...

I've done 3 on my car so far with the car on jackstands, outside on the bare ground without a lot of trouble. Might be different with power steering though. Seems like PS makes everything more of a pain.

jackstands? respect! ;)
done that on my brothers mk3 (tdi with PS), took me forever, a lot easier on the lift.

I'm about to do this to my Jetta. Gotta get together the rack and knuckle first...
