I'm wondering what the torque spec is for an aaz crank bolt [ new 12 point stretch bolt ] is in the Bently book?
The Haynes books says 66 ft lbs, and then a further 90 deg rotation.
Just wondering if both manuals state the same as I don't entirely trust the Haynes info.........

in total it should be around 450 ft lbs. theres a number of turns you have to do... i doubt 66 ft lbs and 90 deg rotation would suffice.

Nope, it's 66 ft/lbs + 90 degrees.

it should be 66 Ft/Ib's and then two 45 deg, you'll be hard pressed
to do the full 90 in one motion.

i agree with the torque spec but my Question is do you put the bolt on :
A) dry ,
B) with some antisieze or
C) with some red locktight
D) other

Should be dry. Use locktite and you'd likely never get it off again.

I talked to a guy that does the 1.8 gas stuff and he said as long as the bolt doesn't break or break anything else you can't get it to tight. He said he puts blue or medium lock tight and runs it home with a 1/2" impact. When I did mine recently though I used the blue locktite and the 66 plus 3/5 of a turn...I didn't have the spec and was scared of the 1/2" impact idea. These guys here know more than I do though.

Personally, I'm scared of the 1/2" impact idea as well !
In my mind impact wrenches are great for taking stuff off, but they're a pretty coarse tool for torquing stuff back accurately.
With a home-made sprocket holder and a 1/2" breaker bar there's no reason not to be able to follow the manufacturer's recommendations for this extremely important bolt... not sure why anyone would want to take a chance doing it any other way ??!!
Having said that, I loves my impact wrench for installing front struts... beats the hell out of the preferred Bentley way. ;-)

I have a nice 3/4 bar, works a treat, in one go too, seems you guys over the pond are a bit lame..

Could be worse, the 2.5TDI that I seem to be the only person willing to replace the timing belts on (when fitted into a T4/Eurovan) in the north of the UK at the moment, that bolt is 160nm plus 180 degrees!
It is about as tight as I can go with the special VW tool to hold the pulley (about 4 ft long!) locked against the suspension and said 3/4 bar, saying that, my old Ingersol Rand air gun always seems to pull them off.
