Title: Testing condition of 1.6td engine
Post by: wil892 on May 31, 2008, 10:04:28 am
HI

I've just bought a 1.6 turbo diesel engine from a passat, with an engine code of SB. Its got 175,000 miles on it with a full service history. The engine will be put into a golf mk2 however before I do this I need to know whether it should be rebuilt.

What tests I could do to the engine(like compression) to determine its condition, as I won't be able to run it until its in the car.
Thanks
Will

well you could try and turn it over and see if the valves are contacting the pistons..

but seriously, i think you can put a high powered drill on the crank to get it spinning fast enough to take a compression reading.  otherwise you need to install a tranny to have the starter in place...

I think I will pull the head anyway. So if the bores are out of spec, does that require a re-bore or just honing. I'm really hoping they arn't though, I thought at most it would just require new rings for the bottom end.
Also I have the option of buying a VEGE reconditioned head with new everything, but this head is supposedly for a JX engine. Is this head the same as my current one?
