Title: 1.6 IDI starters
Post by: dieseldunebuggy on May 22, 2008, 07:42:28 pm
I've heard that TDI starters will fit on the 1.6l idi's. Is this true? Also, I've been told that they turn over faster for better starting. If they will fit, do you think it would be worth putting one on for better starting?

the new starters are geared down i believe.  that way they deliver good speed with loads of torque.  can't hurt to have a beefier starter :)

Yes, the mk2 starters that are smaller then the old ones have a 4:1 planetary gear reduction. I'd imagine the later models also have this although I have not taken one apart

I too would like to know what fits what. If an mk2 will go on mk1 or if the TDI will go on either of these. Great idea.
