Title: how many have broken cams ?
Post by: the caveman on May 17, 2008, 03:43:56 pm
So i posted in non vw group because i have a good customer with a volvo 760 with the 6 cyl vw/audi motor. I was asking if there were any spare heads out there because his timing belt broke or chewed up; at least that's what i thought . Finally got it into the shop, decided to get to the whole belt  before pulling the head or even the valve cover. When i tried to remove the v belt pulley i realized the crank pulley bolt was completely loose. Then i removed the valve cover and low and behold the cam is broken after the # 1 cyl lobes. I've only seen this once before and was wondering if anyone has. I will post pics in a couple of days.  Quite amazing when you see how thick the cam stock is.

Seen it in a LT55, when the docile mechanic didn't check he had it timed up right and cranked it over without turning it manually.
twat.
He also left crank pulley loose, as we found out later.
Expensive mechanic he was, it only started off as a head gasket replacement, ended up being off the road for months!

I had a stock 400 M ford do this in 4 places. Never heard of it before or since. The head was used and it had been stored for like 6 years and all of the people I talked to said that was probably what did it. I didn't think so but like I said never heard of it. sucks for you I hope it all works out.

I've seen it happen twice on 2.2L Dodge Shadow motors but never on any VW motors so far.
