Title: 1.6 N/A upgrades
Post by: Redpawn on May 13, 2008, 06:15:11 pm
I am planning to put a vw diesel in a suzuki samurai I have but I'm
having a hard time finding a factory 1.6 turbo diesel but I do have
a 1.6 N/A diesel.The suzuki has 40hp I've been told the 1.6 N/A has
50hp and the 1.6t has 70hp.The question is what can be done to the
N/A motor to push it to the 70-80hp range with out making it any less
relable or long lived?I heard turboing an N/A motor comes with risks.
But if the boost is keep low would it be that big of a deal on a DD.I don't
want to biuld a race car I just want to make the swap worth wild.Any
advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.

wow, your HP numbers for the TD is high. mine dynoed out at 51 HP with a 2.5" exhaust, K&N, and slightly turned fuel screw.

Add you location to your profile and we should be able to help you track down an engine.

Keep in mind that those HP numbers are when the engine was new, not 20 years old. A Giles Performance pump is definitly an excellent starting step for your pwoer goals.

Oil temperatures are critical, as well as EGT when you are turboing a NA

I'm in florida.I do have access to a 1.9tdi from a newer car but
I'm not shure how it will work with the adaptor kit I want to buy.
That and theres all the wiring that goes with it.I've never heard
of Giles is there some where to get a price for one?I had planned
to put an oil cooler on it and run a piro meter to keep a check on
egts.

You can call Giles at his shop, 905-940-2266. He can build you a custom pump for your application matching your boost levels, and all sorts of other things.

He can also make a mechanical pump for the TDI so there is not all those wires. It would basically have the same amount of wires as a 1.6 NA/TD.

As far as I know, the only difference between the TDI and NA/TD trannys is one is cable shift, one is not and the TDIs have electronic speed sensors for the speedo.

i don't plan to use the trans in the swap I'll be using the samurais
trans. The thing I'm not shure of is the kit say you have to use a
oil fillter housing off a quantum because it kicks back to clear the
motor mount. The 1.9 tdi has the oil filter aimed up and the cooler hanges down.I don't know if the cooler would be in the way.

But if I do end up using the 1.6N/A other than the pump what would
be good power adders for it in a DD.Something I was wondering was
would the eco tech turbo be a good one to put on an na motor?I've
been told that they where smaller the the regular turbo motor's turbo.
What kinda boost would you want to limit it to?What kind of EGT
would be ok and what would be bad?
