First let me say hello. My 2nd post but more to floow I'm sure.
I bought a 1.9 AAZ engine for a swap into a Mazda RX7. I must admit I have no experience with VW motors but tons of questions. Is there a place on this site to have the dumb questions answered without doing endless searches?
thanks

You'll probably find you'll get the best discussions going if you ask specific questions: meaning that you've done a whack of reading first to get up to speed and figure out the general stuff.
I can also recommend that your very first batch of reading be:

The Bentley service manual has great pictures and descriptions of just about everything involved in caring for the VW diesel engine.

any idea of where to find this manual?

Here's one source:

Excellent bathroom reading.
Opps... did I say that out loud ??!!
-
what rx 7 are you putting the diesel into?
post some pics!
-
Just excellent work there Vince. I must say I am impressed

Can't take credit... there's an occasional gem over on the Vortex ;-)

I'm putting the motor into a 1988 convertible. I use it for commuting but it only gets 19-20 mpg! thats the best even when brand new. How do I post pics on this site? I took a few during the the test fit last Sunday. I'm working with a machinist right now to make the adapter plate for motor/tranny and to machind the Mazda fly wheel to bolt to the VW crank.
I intend to use the Mazda tranny to avoid moving things and fabricating when I could just right a check:)

haha thats great i love rx7s, my friend has an 85 i believe thing is fast as hell and its not even a turbo. he has all kinds of mods on it
-
You can make the N/A cars really fast but mileage will suffer. the rotary motor is 1.3 liters and still only gets 19-20 mpg. If I can get 35-40 and still have 125 hp I'll be happy as ****

Will this manual tell me if the AAZ motors came without p/s and what to do to put tension on the water pump belt?
is the turbo on the AAZ motor variable or constant pitch?
what about the crank pulley that I hear breaks?
thanks
-
I tihnk all AAZ motors came with p/s...but it can easily be removed.
The turbo on the aaz is a fixed pitch turbo but there are ways of adapting a variable turbo onto it!!!!
As for the crank pulley...yes it is the weakest point of the motor but it can be fixed in several ways:
1) take out crank and machine it to accept the TDI style gear
2) install some dowel pins thru the pulley into the crank
3) change the timming belt and use a new pulley and bolt, also inspect the crank for damage.
-
thanks for the tips on the crank pulley. Now to find the threads for dowel pins and pulley replacement. as for removing the p/s pump, any idea if VW had a high mount tensioner for the water pump belt?
lewis

are these dowel pin holes there or will I need to drill them?
lewis
-
Nope, have to be drilled.
-
Thanks Jimfoo. Can I drill them without removing the crank? Do you know what exactly happens to the crank pulley? I mean what does it look like when it's going bad? Supposedly the pulley had been replaced by the previous owner. How would I tell?
thanks

This (http://vwdiesel.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=13828) should answer most if not all your questions. When the crank and/or pulley are going bad, you will see where the metal is deforming and should feel quite a bit of slop if you hold the unbolted pulley on the crank.
