I had previously bought a 1.6 td aneroid pin to fit in my aaz however i've been browsing in the forum and found quite a number of other pins you people use, ranging from cummins to rover.
I am using my car as a daily driver in a country where there are few long stretches of road. At present with the AAZ in standard trim it is pulling out 42-47 mpg, however it does so with relatively gutless performance :( would a larger/better aneroid pin maintain fuel economy or plumb it down the drain?
Which one should I go for? The diesel pump service shop i bought the 1.6 td pin from said he would replace it with any other model i would like... but which one?
Thanks
-
Swapping the boost pin shouldn't negatively affect fuel economy...unless you start driving it harder.
The 1.6 boost pin seems to be as good as any other from what I've read. Also it is adjustable...the profile changes as it is rotated.
Besides, if for some reason you decide you don't like it just undo the four screws on the LDA cover, remove cover, change pin, then reassemble. Easy as pie.

Thanks :)
Can I use second hand ones or they have to be new?
-
Don,use a second hand one,my AAZ has a larger diameter pin than the 1.6 so i couldnt interchange them,i got the rover 220TD pin and its perfect,it has the most aggressive profile that will physically fit on the pin,my AAz flies with it in,its staying,no need to change that again.

i have a AAZ also and was going to the local junker in a couple to pick up a 1.6TD pin it wont fit you say?? or not fit in some pumps> how your fuel econemy now??
-
my pump was brand new a year ago,i took the standard useless pin out, took my old scrap 1.6 pump to bits for the pin,but when i fitted the 1.6 pin to the 1.9 pump it was about 1.5mm smaller and wobbled all over the place, the 1.9 pin wouldnt fit the 1.6 pump obviously as it was too big a diameter,so i went scrap yarding and found the rover 220TD pin, absolutley amazing performance with a T3 turbo, winds up quick too,the spring under the pin is standard, and there is no smoke screw or starwheel to adjust on the AAZ pump i have,i have not touched the fuel screw on the back of the pump its still sealed with the tamperproof cap,and theres NO SMOKE at all,im well impressed,im running 11 psi max so far,i have no intercooler either.
Bert
And the rover pin does not alter as its rotated so it can be fitted anyhow

CAN YOU ONLY FIND A ROVER 200TD PIN IN THE U.S?
i am from canada and havnt even heard of this vehical!
so many therorys! i was going to put the 1.6TD pin in now im stuck..
i have a K24 turbo going on soon so i need a decicion fast >>>> OH 1 more thing even if i change the pin and still leave the small stock turbo for alittle bit whats going to happen? will i still be able to drive it ok>
-
A Cummins pin fit in my AAZ pump. I thing it is also ground a bit deeper then the 1.6 pin.
-
Oh, just remembered an important bit. If you put a different pin in, put in a different spring as well. Otherwise the pin will go to full fuel with only 4 PSI. I put the Cummins spring in, and calculated it will give full fuel somewhere around 11 PSI. Otherwise you will probably be smoking all the time.
-
different spring as in i use a spring from the pump i removed the pin from? i.e. if i put a 1.6 td pin i use the 1.6 td spring and the same for the rover one?
how much different is the cummins from 1.6? earlyer increase in fuelling?

Yes. Probably any other spring will work with any other pin. The AAZ spring is just very weak as there was no need for a stiff one with a straight pin.

I haven't seen them side by side but from the pictures, the Cummins looks ground more.

Cummins pin and spring compared to AAZ pin and spring. Although it is shorter, the Cummins spring will work as it is stiffer. I had to open up the bottom just a tiny bit so it would fit over the steel spring seat.

1.6 pin. You can see that it looks wider than the Cummins pin at it's smallest diameter.

Thanks Jimfoo, however I have to ask what James8485 asked... if I keep my stock turbo (K03 003) do I risk doing any damage with a better boost pin?
I'm really divided between the cummins and the rover pin... I went to the diesel pump shop and he said that he has rover 220 boost pins in stock however i have to specify which cummins boost pin i would require, so jimfoo can you tell me what engine yours came from as well as pump type?
Also... which one has the best profile for a stock turboed aaz? nothing off the wall or something that drains my tank every time i floor the pedal...
-
...You could always grind down the AAZ pin and make it look like the 1.6 one. Shouldn't be that hard...

I have no idea what my pin came off. The guy just had it sitting around the shop.
-
The pump shop had 13 different boost pins for cummins 4 cylinder engines... so I guess i can't go the cummins route :( over to the dilemma between rover 220 and the 1.6 td...
regards the spring i got a 1.6 td spring running around... can i use that with the rover pin?
what spring did you use bert?
-
Hi lads,i used the rover 220TD pin with the aaz spring, theres no starwheel or smoke screw in my pump,i have got no plastic washer on the pin either, and i dont have any smoke and loads of power,so i assume i struck lucky??
Bert
-
opened mine for some investigative surgery... no starwheel and no smokescrew... and when i pulled the pin out there was no washer as well...
Will get the 220 pin sometime next week and see... how much is your average mpg with it bert?
-
mpg............ no idea,im having too much fun to care

Diesel pump shop just turned unfriendly... they said that after replacing the boost pin they need to recalibrate the pump (i thought that recalibration was for the old inline pumps!) as well as a lot of other stuff that they did not explain.... totalling $ 120! they said that they need the pump number for the rover 220 and are suddenly refusing to sell me the rover pin if i replace it myself! they almost sounded sour by saying that if they knew what i was going to do they would not have sold me the 1.6 td pin in the first place! w*f???
-
That's a load of BS! I wouldn't go back to them for anything. Don't you have any junk yards you can get one from?
-
Agree with jim, thats crap, they want some money out of you
Bert
-
dongti ... they are trying to rape you man .....
the bull they are feeding you stinks so bad , it's making my eyes water over here .
makes me wonder what else they have lied about ......?
-
well:
1) it is madness to haphazardly replace boost pin without watching results on a propper pump tester bench as to how the pump will react
2) i have to replace the feeler pin since now there will be increased travel
3) they regret seling me the 1.6 td pin because of the damage i might do to the engine without propper testing
4) boost pins are not interchangeable unless done by someone trained
5) 1.6 pin is of a smaller diamiter than my AAZ pin so excessive play will be present... when i suggested the rover they said that pins are not interchangeable between brans unless the rover has a similar bosch pump...
6) for the boost pin to be removed the pump must be out esp. for a boost pin with an aggressive profile otherwise it gets stuck on the feeler pin
That about summs it up... also highlights the fact that usually i never explain mods to most shops i intend to do... if i need anything i usually just go with any relevat part numbers and just get the item like the 1.6 boost pin... shame on me for explaining exactly what i was going to do
since usualy i just walk into a parts shop with part number / car year and any other relevant details and say "One like this please" golden words indeed
-
p.s. prior to fitting the aaz i took the pump to them for a service and watched them in 45 min strip it down, replace all washers and plastic bits and had a and on providing them with shaft bearings i bought from ebay they replaced them... recalibrated pump and was ready... all they charged was $90 for a complete stripdown so they were on my good books ... at least prior to the above post
-
You know I doubt they're trying to screw you or anything. I've heard similar comments about modding the pump from shops and I think that while they are good, and fast at what they do, they are just mechanics who follow the book and dont think outside the box. They do everything to the stock specs and they would definately not want to deviate from that and possibly be held accountable if your engine blows up.
I was trying to find a pump seal kit locally a couple weeks ago and one of the shops was hesitant to sell me the kit cause he just had a customer try to do a reseal himself and the pump is now in the shop with a munched head. I can understand, being an engineer, that due dilligence is everything but you need to be able to think outside the box too.
-
Can anyone help regarding pump part numbers (for 1.6 td or rover 220 d) so i can buy the boost pin locally or does anyone have any suitable boost pins running around that i can purchase? (paypal)
-
An option is to find a machine shop to turn an offset cone on your pin. Lots of pics on here to show them what you need.
-
i got a lathe but it can't do offset :(
-
Just drill a slightly offset hole in some round stock, tap it, and use the threaded diaphragm side to attach it. If you can't do a taper with the lathe bit, you could always use a file by hand with it in the lathe.
-
Or you could just grind one side and leave the other stock. Grinding seems a lot easier than turning a custom one on a lathe.
-
i'll see what i can cook up to-morrow since its my first day off in ages...
-
then again... i'll start off with fitting the 1.6 td one ... it does have about 1.5 mil of difference in diamiter but maybe if i sleeve the top and bottom bit... it won't have as much play!
-
Don,i have done my pin is 3 mins, literally,im a mechanic and have stripped pumps in the past, but it really is easy,i will go scrapyarding tomorrow and try to find a rover 220D pin for you
Bert
-
Thanks Bert, I also just noticed... you're from UK :) so cheap post and no customs bullshyte lol jokes aside, I got my engine from Universal Salvage there about 2 months ago. Actually got the whole car with rear accident damage which we cut in half... my mate kept the body, I took the engine... So hopefully its running the same pump as yours is, being a UK model, so straight swap.
I envy you guys... we don't have actual scrapyards here so i can;t really go scrapyarding myself.
Just let me know the total... when we discuss a way to send you the money that's convenient to you.

This week I changed the pin from a 1.6TD into my 1.9TD pump and thet were the same dia. I actually swapped them they both were a perfect fit. The 1.9 had a very long spring in there and the 1.6 had a short stiffer one(green). the 1.6 pump is from a '90 Jetta and the 1.9 is from a '95 Golf. I also have a 1.9 pump from a '97 golf which has the different pulley(3 bolt no keyway like TDI) I can use that camplate to put a TDI plunger with no mods.
