Title: KKK K24 Rebuild question
Post by: starrd on March 21, 2008, 12:18:23 pm
Working on my K24 rebuild with one of Jake's kits and I have a question. With much persistance and the aid of a hot wrench, I managed to separate the housing from the center setion - man those 6 housing bolts are a pain with all the corrosion.

My problem is I haven't seen or read about a good method for marking the compressor wheel location on the shaft prior to removal.  I've thought of a couple of ways, but I thought I should ask here first.  How have people done this??  Thanks

Huh, funny you should ask.  I'm doing the same process.  See my WTB post in the for sale section to see my broken bolt adventure.

I use a tiny jewelers file to put a very fine line in the end of the turbo shaft, lined up with the nerd cast into the compressor wheel.  I also put a couple little hash marks next to the side where the nerd is going to line up.  Otherwise you have a line, and two choices on where to line up.

If you can't find the nerd, use a permanent marker on the wheel.

Thanks for the reply.  Is this what you mean by the nerd:

Also, is that accurate enough?  Is it possible to mark the shaft to the wheel after the nut is removed?

Yup, thats the nerd.

Go ahead and take the nut off, and scribe a mark on the end of the shaft, lined up with the nerd.

I usally go straight across the end of the shaft, and put an extra hash mark on the side that lines up with the nerd.

Please tell me that you're rebuilding these yourself because you can and not because there isn't anyone else that is able. I need my K14 (I think) rebuilt and after reading the rebuild threads I'm more convinced that I'd rather pay someone to do it. ;). Any shops that you all can recommend?
Thanks
Rob

I'm rebuilding them my self be cause its not that difficult and I'm saving allot of money.  Its more putzy taking the turbo off the car than taking the turbo apart.  I've done 3 K24s so far.

Try posting a WTB in the for sale section.  Or search for 'turbocharger' in google or Altavista.
