What do you need to pull the turbo of a 1.6TD? I have never really done much exploration in this part of the car and I want to be prepared when I go to the scrapyard tomorrow morning! :)
Thanks! Matt

metric wrenches, 13mm 12-point socket, extension, perhaps a universal joint, PB Blaster (Canadian Tire now carries it!), strong language.
There are four 13mm 12-point bolts that bolt the turbo to the exhaust manifold, four 13mm nuts that bolt the turbo to the downpipe, and a couple of wrenches handle the oil feed and return line... I like to use a crowsfoot on the return line which iirc is a 22mm.

I didn't expect a response so late! Thanks Vince!

I definately need to get a life.

I've only ever done it with the engine out of the car. Can it even be done with the engine in? If it can, it will be a major PITA. Good luck.
-
I tried and gave up on a junkyard MK2. My tool selection was quite limited though but it definitely looked like a PITA to get out.

It can definitely be done in the car, the things that make it simpler...
-lots of penetrating oil a day or so beforehand on the non blind holes
-a torch to heat the bosses the bolts go into
-taking hoses, supply and return lines and shields off the turbo
-3/8 breaker bar (smaller head than a ratchet)
-air hammer (if 12pt heads strip)
-strong language as Vince noted ;)
-
Might be way way easier to take out the entire manifold... or head for that matter, and deal with the really nasty bolts later.
The head is easy... the bolts have oiled tops... and if need be you can sawzall the downpipe. Amazing what you can do in a junkyard !
-
Might be a good idea to sawzall all of those cast iron down pipes that you ever come in contact with.

Haha I got it off! I had 6/8 bolts off when someone came by wanting the whole engine. I helped him get it off then took the bolts of and got my turbo!
The two inner bolts at the bottom were the ones I couldn't get off with the engine on the car. I'm sure it can be done but it would be difficult. With the engine off and hanging on a crane.... Easy.
Thanks again Vince!

The other day I was in the yard trying this... I am sure if i tried to soak in something penitrating oils woulda helped loads...
Good ol'Cheater bar
I just pulled the whole head and passed it off to the owner of the junker that only really wanted the turbo and couldnt get it off... He threw in the rest of the head and mani's
I was sure happy as I needed some valves and a cam
the yard is great....sawzall and bad language included heh
