Title: New to diesel engines and have a question about 1.9 td
Post by: iltisdiesel on March 02, 2008, 03:10:02 am
I have a 1.9 td that I was give by a buddy down the road. He said it ran
when he put it a way. When i was cleaning it up I turned the fly wheel
and found it to turn with some resistance but i thought with the high compresion of the diesel that it would be very dificult to turn over, is that the case or is it as easy as a gas engine to turn by hand?

It should be harder to turn than a gas engine. Spec for compressoin is at least 377 psi (19.5 to 1 compression) Last time I checked mine has about 480 psi across all 4 holes. Gas is probably 150 psi? 1.6 diesels have even more squeeze at 23.5 to 1.

If you think it's junk though and want me to take it off your hands.....

I heard it running a before he pulled about a year ago but was surprised how easy I could turn it over by hand. I was thinking that maybe i should send it to be overhauled before I put it in my Iltis. Hate to do all that work and find out that I should have rebuilt it before putting it in.

can you bolt a tranny to it,and test fire it on the floor before installing?
i know, thats alotta work too,but better than having to remove it after installing it

I'm with him, see if you can test fire it. Should be fine if it ran when pulled..........

No I don't have a spare tranny wish I did. This is going to replace my 1.7 gas engine so i have alot of work to do to put it in that's why i would like to know if it's good but I do know it was running when removed.

When I got my 1.9 that had been sitting for a while, I could turn it over with a ratchet. I think with the lack of oil on the rings, compression could easily slip by as it was way harder after I finally started it.

Also the valves probebly have some corrosion on them from sitting so they are not sealing very good until it gets running again.
