Title: How can I immediately tell if I have a Hyd. engine or not?
Post by: VW on February 12, 2008, 11:30:27 am
I have an 85 Jetta but not sure which engine I have? It is a TD 1.6 but not sure if it is a Hydraulic motor or not. What is the easiest way to tell?

Also is there a way to tell if a 1.6L motor is an actual TD engine and not a N/A? My brother just bought an 82 Quantum wagon that say TD on the trunk lid but is N/A under the hood.

We suspect someone in the past swiped the TD motor and replaced it with a N/A. But it might be that only the Turbo parts were taken?? Because the guy who my brother bought the car from said he had to put the car back together as it was a basket case when he bought it.

Not knowing what exactly the previous owners have actually done, I thought maybe this site could help determine what engine the car really has.

Thanks

look behind the injection pump. If you see a hump in the head and block it is hydro, if it is flat it is mech. There should also be another hump directly to the driver side of the pump regardless of if it is hydro or mech
