Title: 1600td t3?
Post by: redbaronmulisha on January 06, 2008, 03:54:22 am
alright gents a newish member from across tha pond.how goes it.was told bya mate a t3 turbo would go on a 1600td and make 150bhp with some necessary mods.do-able?
well so far i gota gtd turbo 1900td pump gtd injectors.but intercooler piping seems hard to get decent stuff unless you can weld aluminium(i can only do steel) so any ideas?
one last question is there a section on here showing how to do mods eg modify the pump?

cheers jonny

Welcome, noob. Over here, the T3 came stock on the 1.6TD. It's a great turbo and is good for some serious power. As for intercooler piping, do steel and paint it.
BTW, I'm using a T3 on my 1.9 TD.

Stewardc, how do you like the T3 on the 1.9?  Better then the K03?
Sorry for the hijack.........

Yes I do, though some say they like the K14 (what my engine had stock)better. I like the kick when the turbo comes up. :D

I have a uk spec MK2 golf GTD, with a T2. Would the T3 be a direct replacement, .ie.same manifold fixings?

Jonny why not use silencer pipe to make the intercooler pipe sections? That's an easy material to work with, saw it done on a number of cars and with some engine paint they look good as well! Planning to use that on mine when I fit the AAZ in and intercool it.

What turbos did RA and SB engines have? All i know is that they both had watercooled units but not sure if t-3's t-2.1's or k14's...

I'm not an expert, but I think the T3 is a direct boltin but perhaps a boost controller would be a better (easier) fix. Mine is 2-stage..

May be a stupid question but what does a boost controller do?  Control the waste gate?

Yes. Mine will allow 10-12psi on the low setting and 18-22 on high. Twice the boost at the flip of a switch.

Why would you want to do that?  I can see on a gas engine because of mixture problems but on a diesel would you not want to hold high boost and add fuel acordingly? Say put variable preasure regulator to the boost pin at the pump and control the boost fuel with that if you want to run better economy VS power?

On a diesel, you won't get high boost without the fuel. Low fuel = low boost.

I see so instead of letting off the throttle you limit the boost/fuel (because of the boost pin).  I don't really see the point but to each his own.....

sorry about all the questions im new to derv tuning

@ dongti i was in malta there a few weeks back at the drag racing so quick cars there.there was a diesel fiesta ripping the track up as well as a mk2 escort with carbs and NOS,was petrol tho.really nice country so ill be back in summer time
