my car has the w terminal but i dont have the cash to buy a new cluster. can i just take a tach and hook the signal part of it up to the w terminal?

Yes, as long as that tach is a diesel specific one. Gasser tachs run of the distributer (different signal).

im not sure what the tach is off of. i found it in a box when i was under the house looking for my dads compress9ion tester.....will it hurt anything if i hook it up/.

If it goes to 7K its a gasser.

I doubt it but I don't know.

Look for markings on it and type them into google

The W signal is approximately 12 times faster than a gasser tach will expect, and the waveform is different as well... let us know what you find out !
