Title: 4-motion / AWD Diesel Swap In?
Post by: subsonic on November 06, 2007, 07:38:10 am
Has anyone here ever done a diesel engine swap into one of these platforms?  I do not think I have ever seen a AWD/ 4 motion diesel here in the US.  I think the only gas models I have seen are the passat sedans and wagons.

I would love to see a TDI or hot AAZ swap into a 4 motion / AWD Passat wagon platform.   Does anyone know if this driveline is strong enough to handle the larger torque the diesels put out?  Most of these are auto's as well.

A used Gasser versian is like 12 grand less than a used factory equipped TDI.   Add the big DP, nozzle and pump mods, to go with a bigger vnt and you could have a very nice car.

Only AWD / TDI Project I have ever seen done. http://www.hasenwerk.ca/golfcountrytdi/default.shtml

Putting a TDI into a Country is a much different proposal than a 4 Motion.

But this guy used only a NA body and swapped the whole drive train in.

Well.... I did this one...

http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=131414

I used a 1998 Audi A4 wagon and swapped in a V6 TDI engine and 6-speed quattro drivetrain from a European model.  Not super easy, but the factory did make them, so there were parts / resources available.

I've got 12k miles on it so far and it's been great!  There's one other V6 TDI in an AWD passat in the US (also a conversion).  He's in NY, I believe.

I personally would like to see someone actually complete a Quantum syncro wagon (or 4kq)  with the 5-cyl TD or a later 5-cyl TDI.... or step up and try a TDI / PD 4-cyl into an Audi A4.

There's plenty of quattro's over here that came with 1.8T gasser or 2.8 gasser motors...just a matter of answering questions about bellhousings, flywheels, motor mounts, manifolds, clusters, etc.

We might not see any of those projects until the "used cars" drop in value so it's less of a gamble.

I plan on finding a TT quatro and than drop in a TDI in it. I love the ALH engines and that's what I plan on using. Build a 220-250 hp ALH and drop it in the TT.
So, if anyone finds out how to mate a TDI engine to the AWD tranny...I'll pay you your weight in beer:)

Hmmm.... you might try this thread.

I think the one on the second page might be FWD but I thought I had seen / heard about an AWD TT project recently though...

I remember seeing a green one done a while ago and Storx is doing one as we speak. Actually he just picked up the TT and is sourcing a TDI engine.

Your link I was looking for when I posted the one above, but I read yours a while back and I forgot all the details.
How's the car working now?

Do you think the stock tranny / differential setup in the gasser VW's would be able to handle a souped up TDI / AAZ?

It's great!  Runs very well and I'm looking to get it chipped soon.  I'll be loving driving a quattro again in the winter.

Do you mean the 4-motion's?   The GF's got a 2004 Passat wagon with the 4-motion setup and the 1.8T (170 hp, I believe) and it handles it just fine.  I know the torque on a TDI could potentially be a lot higher, but I think they're pretty robust systems.   I know people that are putting more than twice stock hp through the A4 and TT style quattro systems and the trans doesn't seem to be the weak point.

For me, the big question about doing that swap would have to do with the transmission / input shaft fitment issues along with flywheel / clutch solutions coupled with the challenge of making the electronics work with either an OEM style cluster from Europe or getting around the immo.

If you went early TDI, that'd solve some of those electronic problems, but you'd still have to do some figuring with manifolds / brackets, accessories, etc.

Sounds like a fun project and I hope someone will do it, but most people aren't willing to take that "leap" of faith by finding a base car that could cost anywhere from $4k on up to procure then finding the bits / engineering the answers to the questions above.

What about the Canadian passat syncro / Golf syncro route?  A buddy of mine imported the drivetrain/tunnel  and mated it to a wicked 16VT gasser

Find a B3 Passat syncro from Canada, sell the G60 it has to some kid for his MK2 and swap in a diesel.
