Wow MK2GTD that car has an amazing spec! What difference does the 1.9 TD cam make and is it a straight drop in? How does it go?!

Bert,

Performance is good, 50mph in third and still pulling all the way round to the red in the rev counter, havnt been on the public hyway as its SORN till i come back from Basrah in April....... 4 month holiday courtesy of the RAF. I had to wind the fuel settings back a bit as it was smoking like a traction engine an it spinning the wheels changing fron first to second in the wet.  The wastgates been adjusted and i have an actuator of a RS Turbo Fiesta on it. Bit of a mish mash on the Turbo side, the company we use to recon the turbos on out fire trucks said it was good for 150 bhp !!!, somehow i dont think my head gasket could cope with that much boost pressure.

What i thought was a 10mm head is a 11mm.. no wonder it bloody smokes, the head came of a perkins prima pump, for us old pharts who remember that icon of British motor engineering....... a Maestro Diesel, the Montego one is the same.   Apart from fire trucks i also work on Landrovers, the Military variant (WOLF) they run a 300 TDI engine with a bosche VE pump fitted, dont know what size the head is on those, will have to get one through the system and try it out, thats if it fits !!

Type vw 10mm diesel head on google and it should bring you an American site up, think its called vw diesel engineering, he does 10mm head for $99 ( 50 quid) plus post and packing. Also PROTHE on ebay.com does them aswell, i had a set of .205 nozzels of him for my B5 110 TDi ( red i ) Passat, that thing shiffted  :D

Bert did you put your VDO pressure sender in the head or the oil filter housing ? I have 2 VDO "T" pieces and was going to put the pressure sender in the filter housing and oil temp sender in the head using T pieces to retain the s senders that are fitted.

Post by: bert on October 14, 2007, 11:03:46 am
My oil pressure sender is on the side of the head, the oil temp sender is on the filter housing,i put the pressure sender on the head as its the farest away from the pump,if theres no pressure there i know im in the quadmire    when its read hot after a thraping i see 2 bar on the head, when its cold 9 bar at tickover,10 bar if revved to 1500 rpm.
I will look for a monty fuel pump then,i scrapped 3 maestro vans and a monty turbo recently    i didnt even look, bosch pumps too

Con,

The cam i am refering to is the cam plate in the injection pump, yes it did make a bit of a differance  :D ......... smoke wise... :(   luckily for me we have VOSA Diesel Smoke Test equipment in the workshop, had to adjust the timing a bit to get it right, Still smokes a bit but will run some millers diesel addative through when i get back next year.

Your car looks good, any reason why the head is off ?

I have a spare head, GTD injection pump, inlet and exhaust manifold laying around in work..... the inlet and exhaust manifold i am taking with me to Basrah next month, i have a new set of gaskets and i am going to match the inlet and exhaust ports to the gasket, when i get some down time, a mild bit of polishing on both of them to improve the flow.  The pump is going off to the company we use for our fire trucks to play with while i am away, see what they come up with.  Would like to take the head and port  / polish that too but with all the kit i am taking out, there is a weight limit, the head can wait till i am back in the UK.  One of the lads who works for me knows the bloke who builds the diesel engines for the VW Caddy TDi Motorsport van, might see what he can do for me if he can be approached.

Holy crap, these are the some the sweetest td vws I have ever seen! My question is what is the difference between the American Golf TDI and the Canadian Golf GTD? The GTD's look way sweeter! Could an American purchase a golf GTD and be able to get parts easily?

golf tdi or regular golf diesels?   If i recall they didn't make mk2 golfs turbo diesel except for the GTD which is a european model not found in N/A.  Jettas however they did make turbo diesels  8)

Quite a bit yeah, had to make a custom seat frame, and narrow the seat itself. Plus the joy of the hand brake.
But yeah there are 3 seat belts in there, its a bit of a squeeze!

caddy with a 2 liter AAZ? How is this possible? or what I mean how did you do it? and they did make mk2 golf turbo diesel 2 doors. I stumbled across on in the wrecker it was very clean but had 500 000 kms on it and i already had 5 VW s in the driveway. It came factory with a 4.25 ring and pinion too!

Hi guys,

Had a 16v mk2 gti a few years ago and recently got the desire for another, but i have big commute (60 mile a day) and cant really justify the fuel costs. Ive got a 1.9 TDI Seat Toledo at the moment ( 1999 Mk2).

Anyhoo, discovered the mk2 gtd but i have a bit of a downer on 5drs.

Then I spotted this on the bay:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=230186054358&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=013

and of course I had to have it!

Looking forward to tidying it up and tweaking the engine, hopefull you guys will be able to help me get it up to the same sort of power levels as my toledo, if I can without having to rebiuld the engine, ill be happy!

Ive got lots of questions, but they can wait for now!

Think im going to spend a lot of time here...........

YOU UTTER, UTTER B*****D!

I was watching that one - a 3 door GTD has to be sweet - just lack of funds at the moment :(  - still you got her at a very good price - I thought it would go a lot higher.

enjoy mate - & I'll try to keep the jealousy ratcheted back to a minimum

Those are 15" Corrado Steelies.
You can get them from  World Impex (http://worldimpex.com/parts/genuine-part-wheel-disc_54110.html) or old skool industries (http://www.oldskoolindustries.com/catalog/catalog/45/wheels).

Part Numbers:

191-601-149-G-WC6 - center cap(Silver, covers lug nuts)
871-601-171 - center cap(Black, doesn't cover lug nuts)
321-601-173-A-01C - lug cap(4 per wheel when using black center cap)

Hello all!

Finally glad to be part of what seems to be an awesome group of enthusiasts!

Recently I was blessed with this little gem. Plans are to keep it almost completely stock, aside from reversable bolt on items should the time arise that it needs to go back to it's 100% pristeen stock condition.

Plans are:
-Coilovers
-Mason-tech Oilpan bash plate
-2.5" SS Turbo-back exhaust
-A nice set of wheels
-E-code aero's (non smoked)
-Chrome accent pieces(front emblem, doorhandle inserts, rear emblem)
-EGT, Tach, and Boost gauges (all 2 1/16")
-Fixed broken stereo pieces No boom boom here, just a basic install.

And possibly a set of Euro-smalls and a 16V spoiler.

How I'm starting:

Don't mind the quicky boostgauge install, i was just checking on the operation of it!

Thanks again Nick! :D I owe ya one!

Expect to see more of me on these boards, and excuse my diesel ignorance, I'm working on the research!

my '94 daily driver - AAZ with intercooler, 1.6 boost pin, and soon to have a 2.5" mandrel bent turbo-back system.

sits on koni sport springs (-40mm front and rear) and koni red front, adjustable koni yellow rear. also running 280mm SEAT cupra 16V Gti disks/calipers/hubs on the front, and will soon use a VR6 rear beam with anti roll bars and the wider track for some more rear "poke".

needless to say, if this car doesnt have it all in the straight, it makes up for it all on the twisties!

and my project mk1 LS 1977  - soon to be converted to 1.6TD with k14 to start off with, maybe go to t3 - i'll see what its like. Waiting on head to come back from the shop...

Finally, my old 1979 GLD 1.5n/a - this was my first car, and went through many changes - started out as a rusty heap. It was carribean green for a while, here it is at its pinnacle -
(http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u139/gldgti/smaller2.jpg)
and after that, it was blue for a couple of years....there it is in the middle...:-)

i dearly, dealry miss this car... sadly it fell to the rust demons.... i fell like weeping...

First post! I usually lurk around here looking for tips to work on my Golf.

This is my Golf GLD. Runs on biodiesel. Hands down my favourite car ever. It'll be thirty years old next year!

I wish we had those GTD's in Australia. The 1.5 in the GLD is kinda primitive - still great though. Cheers!

Well after feeling the pinch when i got rid of the gtd i thought i should keep my eyes open for another td. This time up came a 96 mk3 td with 110k on ebay and ended up being just down the rd. Ity was a real poopter, but to cut a long story short i gave the guy £170 as i thought atleast the engine is good.
I drove the car back to mine, I ran the gauntlet if u know what i mean  But on the way, i get a flat, so kept on going as i didn't want to hang around and also had the bonnet fly up and smash the screen
So i get back to mine and whats the first thing i do...........Get some coilovers on there  Anyway after a bit of work and a load of bits i had anyway it now looks like this.

1979 Mazda B1800 with 1.9 TD. It has a rebuilt IP with 12 mm plunger, a K24 and a 3 inch straight exhaust and water/meth injection.

Connected to a Volvo M47 5-speed tranny with a 4 puck sinter clutch and uprated audi pressure plate.

Here's my latest project: 86 8v. Still a work in progress. 1.6na from 82 Jetta, ff trans, 16v body kit, passenger mirror delete, fzr600 driver mirror, straight on alignment, .97 ip timing, euro rear bumper, side molding delete, rear wiper delete, antenna delete, cruise control, door handles from Hong Kong, Diesel tach. I have more aero mods planned (moon discs, single wiper conversion, euro turns, underbody streamlining, etc.). Initial baseline mileage test of aprox. 200 freeway miles at 55-60 mph with only engine swap, teardrops, and lowering springs resulted in 62.4 mpg. Tracked with a Garmin nuvi 650c. My goal is 75 mpg highway.

it would of been getting some camber and slammed on its batty, but now the clutch has gone so i gotta sort that out instead, its been one problem after another and i haven't even got it legally on the road yet, my 16v petrol has been much more reliable than this lol.
