Title: 91 eco ticking noise
Post by: trent77 on October 04, 2007, 07:29:55 pm
After my jetta warms up I get a ticking noise around the valve cover area. I have a hydraulic head (not sure if they all do in these years) It sounds like a loose rocker, but with no adjustment that seems strange. Also I would think that would be worse when cold, not warm. It's my first older vw diesel in awhile, but this doesn't sound normal. Any help is appreciated.

sounds like lifters ( oil thins out when cold and can't fill the wear gaps in the lifters)   just try a thicker oil  and see if the problem lessens ...

if it does, consider changing the cam followers (lifters)

how long has it been since you changed your oil? I heard that same sound in a '90 1.6L NA, when I'd rev it the ticking would go away 'till it idled down again for a few seconds.

Seafoam (http://www.seafoamsales.com/motorTuneUpConsumer.htm)!

It cured a noisy lifter in my friends 8V Gas Jetta years back. I have a can in the garage that I am going to use and see if I can cure a noisy lifter in the Audi 200 as soon as I get time.
