Title: chances of a cracked block?
Post by: mk2vr6 on August 31, 2007, 02:46:11 pm
So heres the situation...

Found some oil in my coolant... Theres no oil cooler so I assumed the headgasket.  The head comes off, and the gasket appears to look 100% fine...  no cracks or tears that I can see.  The head is at the shop now but initial indications point to there being no cracks, but it still needs to be checked for straightness.  however, you can quite easily see that the gasket has sealed up perfect around the cylinders, which from what i've seen before is not usually the case with a warped head...

So I heard from a VW tech that some older TD's had a problem with the blocks cracking between the oil/water passages.

What do you think are the chances of this?  I'm in some serious trouble if that turns out to be true...  however, the car never overheated or had a loss in power..  the only way i found out about the 'headgasket' problem was the oil in the coolant -- other than that it ran 100% fine and it has never overheated since i've owned it...  the head looks extremely clean, cleaner than any TD or 1.6D i've ever seen and it only has 183,000kms on a 1992 Jetta TD.

Any other ideas or words that might make me think its 'not so bad'?

I've never heard of cracking blocks being a problem on older diesels. The gasket may appear 100% fine but there's no way to know for sure. Oil may have seeped very slowly into the coolant.

Are you sure there's no oil cooler? It came on ALL 1.6tds in the MK2 and that's a common source of oil and coolant mixing up.

I was under the impression there was no oil cooler on 92 turbo diesels...

but there definitely is not one on my car.

I have a mk2 GTD with 152000 miles on it, it has this problem too. the headgasket is fine and it makes no difference, I just clean out the expansion bottle twice a year with detergent and refit. My dad and grandad have both owned countless mk2 jettas, both N/a and turbo, they all have had this problem and had never had the headgasket changed. They were high mileage cars too, 220000 miles +

The "oil cooler" is directly above the oil filter. It has 2 coolant hoses going into it

before condemming your "head"   check ALL your coolant hoses ....  the rubber breaks off the inside of the failing hose and turns to black goo just before they "POP" and leave you stranded .....   it looks just like oil in the coolant ....
