I'm dropping a junkyard 1.6TD into my formerly 1.6 NA engine bay (engine died.) I'm getting a 1.6TD with pump, turbo, manifolds, and DP. Will the DP mate up with the NA exhaust I have, or am I going to run into issues there?
Thanks,
Ray

The TD downpipe connects lower than the NA setup.
I pulled a junk TD engine out of a Jetta and swapped in a NA diesel.
The toilet bowl off the NA exhaust didn't match up to the TD downpipe in the car. I ended up swapping the whole exhaust from the NA Jetta. Probably only had to swap the downpipe but had the whole exhaust so...

It's a 91 so A2. Fatmobile, was your swap an A1 or A2? I'm a little confused, you said the NA exhaust didn't match the TD downpipe, but that you probably only had to swap downpipes? A DP from a turbo exhaust turbine outlet and a regular exhaust manifold are going to be totally different...
Any other swap tips in general? I have the bentley manual but it seems a bit terse. It basically just says disconnect rad and AC, pull out front of car, disconnect harnesses, unbolt engine and lift.
Thanks,
Ray

Hey now,
My swap was in an '85 Jetta.
I see why you are confused.
When I said:
Probably only had to swap the downpipe but had the whole exhaust so
I should have said, " I probably only had to swap the front part of the exhaust but I had the whole exhaust so..."
TD exhaust pipe might be fatter and allow better flow, not sure on this though.

if you want a direct swap DP you'll need to find one from a mkI TD... the mkIIs and mkIIIs wont fit directly. otherwise, you'll need to have one fabbed up...
...that said, i've been running the 1.6TD in my mkI since last spring, and i've just let the exhaust dump out towards the ground the whole time. no real 'exhaust' on the car. i wouldn't recommend it, but the car works fine with no proper downpipe... no major loss in power that i can feel but i'm sure that is marginally effected.

You're talking about putting a 1.6TD from a Mk2 into a Mk1 when you're saying I'd need a mk1 downpipe to fit right?
I'm taking out a mk2 NA and putting in a mk2 TD.
I looked in the bentley manual last night (now that I have one) and it showed the exhaust being the same for all diesels, turbo diesels, and NA diesels, so I'm hoping it will fit up no problem. My only concern now is removing those spring clips, which the manuals warns will take your face off if you don't use the VW special tool...ugh
