Title: An idea for checking timing
Post by: Bravo2043 on June 17, 2016, 10:11:49 pm
I'm putting a 1Z in my diesel vanagon. Its all coming together. I had an idea and wondered if anyone had tried it.

I've got a Land Rover pump that just came back from the shop calibrated and timed... All that. Next week the old pump bracket gets machined and the motor goes back together.

I'm going to try something. When I start it up (let's get real there is a ton of plumbing to do before that happens) I'm going to hook an o-scope to the crank sensor on ch1 and put ch2 on the injector "beginning of delivery" sensor. Its the oddball long injector on #3. I saved all the TDI stuff so I'm pretty sure I can get a good signal and  check the start of injection timing.

The shop set the pump to 1.2. I'm pretty sure it would run there. My plan is to check it myself before I go.

So has anyone hooked a 2 channel o-scope to check timing?

The LR pump should be set to 1.40-1.45mm as a starting point.  I imagine the o-scope would work, but you'd need a decent baseline to compare to.

Thanks

I'll let you know how it works out.

There are a number of threads that talk about timing by ear. The pump gets set to a spec, Run the motor then make small adjustments based on how it sounds or feels.

I have no problem doing that on a gas engine, but don't have enough experience to do that on a diesel.

How do you know if its too far advanced, or too retarded?

If it's too far advanced it gets too clattery (although TDI engines clatter a bit regardless).  Too retarded, it will smoke more and miss when cold.
