If I read your post right, you're running an SAE 40 oil. Switch to a multi grade 15w40 oil, your starter will love it. In theory these oils are the low number (sae 15) at low temp, high number (sae 40) at high temp.

My bentley does not specify TD or NA, it says
"with oil fitler change - 4.5L (4.7US quarts)"
"without oil filter change - 4.0 liters (4.2US quarts)"

That is for 81-83 engines. I don't think the pan changed much, did it?

the turbo oil pan has to hold more oil... it would only make sense!

stupid dipstick!!! I think i'm at the right amount of oil right now... but unsure... an oil sump level gauge would be crazy cool!!!  8)

Im using SAE40 because its never too cold here, and even the chart in the factory VW engine manual specifies it for 1.6 litre engines in weather above 0 degrees celsius

the capacities are the same for the 1.6 turbo and NA motors, just the API classification is different.

just bought the manual today from a used books trader for 50Rs thats about 90 cents  :D
