Much oil coming out of exhaust manifold
« on: May 30, 2021, 05:06:55 pm »
Got a 1.6 MF Turbo Diesel in a 1986 Jetta (US Spec).

Tons of oil was coming out of the exhaust pipe. We suspected a bad turbo so that has been removed along with all of the exhaust system.

Manifold back on the car.

We plugged the return port on the oil pan, and the supply line to the turbo on the oil cooler.  Test run the motor and it starts and sounds fine, but there is still a bunch of raw oil coming out of the exhaust manifold.

I can't believe the engine would start so easily and run this well if the rings were that bad.

Anyone have a similar experience?

Diesel is refined oil.  Some run their diesel on Waste Motor Oil, WMO, and so yeah it will burn it as it can and just throw the rest out the exhaust.  I would be looking at doing a compression check, and monitor the oil level like a hawk.  Something is not right there.

You may also have bad seals on the valve stems and it is leaking down into the cylinder(s) at that point.  That would be the most likely in my mind.  An exhaust seal is gone and the oil is just being blown out by the air of the cylinder.

Thanks for the note.  I'm planning to get the head off next and see what I see.

It would be an uncommon issue, but the head could be cracked in a way that connected the pressurized oil gallery to an exhaust port.

Any chance your crankcase is overfull of oil? Change the dipstick recently? If there's any question, drop the oil, and put in the exact required amount.

Dont get ahead of yourself do the compression test first.
