1.6D Swapped 85 GTI
« on: February 26, 2021, 11:27:12 am »
Hey VWDiesel, this is my first step into the VWDiesel community and its starting with an oddball of a car. A buddy sent me the link to this 1985 Diesel Golf about an hour away for $800, ad states
-ODO reads 358k Miles
-PO swapped 1.6D motor
-Has leaky injector pump but runs and drives fine otherwise.

The main draw towards this for my Dad and I is that we'll be able to use the smog exempt title and do a vin swap on my 89 GTI 16V we are currently also building (but has been out on hold due to multiple reasons), but it is also coming at the perfect time of me needing a new daily driver. So I messaged the guy about it and got the VIN, got a carfax which led to me learning that this car started life as an 85 GTI, spent most of its time in Washington bouncing around different owners, and somewhere along the way before coming to CA the 1.6D was dropped in and registered into the CA DMV as a 85 Diesel Golf. Which would explain why it has GTI bumpers, trim, teardrops, 4 disc brakes, and a 5speed.

Currently she's a rough starter and haven't gotten anywhere near warm because of the huge IP leak, I'm just about ready to order the rebuild kit + shaft seal from Partsplaceinc, along with the timing kit, a new timing belt/tensioner.

Thanks!
Dom

You'll have to get that 1.6 in top shape to pass as a GTi.    If it has good compression you can mod the injection pump to be more advanced and fuelly.
https://dieselfuelinjector.guru/ can test and fix your injectors.   Bad injectors can ruin your pistons
