Crank, but no start
« on: November 16, 2018, 09:25:08 am »
I bought my sister a first car so any help diagnosing my issue is MUCH appreciated!
Car has been sitting for over a year at my old neighbors house, he knows nothing about the car or it’s condition so I got it cheap. Car is a 2004 JETTA with the BEW Engine.

The car will crank but very slow, the rpm fluctuates when trying to start it, occasionally jumping to 200- 1300. Glow plug light flashes when attempting to start it. CEL is on for p0112 and p0726.

The battery is a perfect battery I took out of my ALH, so I can rule that out.

Where to start and what to check?

If the battery is good but it cranks slowly, then I would suspect the starter or wiring to/from the starter.

I would be pulling the starter and giving it a good service to be sure it is turning fast, has good contact at the terminals and the solenoid is working well.  In the process I would be cleaning all the posts, and connections from the battery terminal to the starter and any points in between.  Not really versed in the newer VW's.

Hope you got a deal and not a lemon.

Bought the car for 300$, actually very clean. GLS with black leather interior and sunroof. If I decide it’s not worth the money to fix I can keep it as a parts car for my ALH. It’s the same color and has a couple similar motor parts (turbo, resivours, sensors etc).

I am going to try cleaning all contact points Tomorrow, as well as a fuel filter with new lines.  I’m going to keep my eye on the pulleys and make sure they are free and not holding back the SERP belt.

All fuel line and clamps are good and have been wrapped. Still wont start when engine is warm but dont have to wait as long to start again since wrapping the fuel lines
